Epidemiologist III

The Epidemiologist III will serve as a senior-level epidemiologist responsible for carrying out a broad and complex range of epidemiologic activities related to the surveillance, detection, and prevention of disease and injuries. The specific public health topics will depend on the objectives of the grant and the unique needs of each community we serve. Working independently and as an experienced team member under the direction of the Program Director or the Epidemiology Center Director, the Epidemiologist III will lead community-initiated and -driven projects through a community-based participatory research (CBPR) lens, provide expertise in research methods/instruments, and independently conduct analyses. This position is in our Madison, Wisconsin office with occasional travel throughout Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin is a part of the position and is important for building relationships with the communities we serve.

Principal Duties

The Epidemiologist III is a senior-level epidemiologist and is expected to perform all the functions of an Epidemiologist I and Epidemiologist II under the minimal supervision of a Program Director or the Tribal Epidemiology Center Director. An Epidemiologist III will advocate for data quality for American Indians and Alaska Natives within the region to outside entities and perform core public health functions. This position may also be responsible for overseeing staff.

Regular functions to be performed by an Epidemiologist III

• Provide epidemiologic assistance to Bemidji IHS Area Tribal communities.
• Work with internal and external partners to improve American Indian and Alaska Native data quality and access.
• Acquire data, produce reports, and coordinate public health initiatives with Tribal communities.
• Have a lead role in writing public health surveillance reports.
• Oversee technical assistance requests and provide technical assistance independently to Tribes.
• Support the entire project lifecycle, including development, implementation, and analysis (or and evaluation).
• Provide mentorship to all junior Epidemiologists.

Additional functions to be performed by an Epidemiologist III 

• Communicate appropriately with community partners to fully understand Tribal communities’ requests.
• Assist communities in selecting appropriate methods based on project scope.
• Work with communities to craft appropriate data collection instruments.
• Participate in external committees and workgroups.
• Lead grant writing efforts.
• Present at conferences and seminars.
• Serve as the lead author on white papers and journal articles.
• Perform other duties as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

Working Relationships and Scope

Reports directly to a Program Director or the Epidemiology Center Director; works independently with acquired experience. Planning, coordination, and execution of work are reviewed for cultural appropriateness, accepted methods, attention to detail, consistency, and overall presentation and outcome. Regular contact with all GLITEC staff members is necessary, and communication is required as needed with external partners and employees throughout GLITC for the purpose of gathering and sharing relevant information.

Qualifications

Required: A master’s degree related to the field of public health with at least six credit hours of epidemiology-related coursework and four or more years of experience in epidemiology, OR a doctoral-level degree in epidemiology OR other non-epidemiology graduate degree or certification (e.g., RN, MD/DO, DDS/DMD, DVM, Ph.D., RS) with specific epidemiology training (e.g., MPH degree, CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service or CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship) OR at least six years of experience performing epidemiologic work under the guidance of a Senior Epidemiologist (Epidemiologist III) or higher. Must be willing to work directly with Tribal communities and engage in public health practice. Must be willing to travel throughout Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to meet with the communities we serve as needed.

Preferred: include experience working with Tribal governments, Tribal organizations, and/or not-for-profit agencies in epidemiology. Ability to work independently and as a program team member. Evaluation experience is preferred.

Individuals must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; professional demeanor and appearance; problem-solving skills; ability to manage time effectively; and self-motivation skills. Individual must be able to work effectively under pressure, build positive work relationships with internal and external partners, interact professionally with a wide variety of people, speak in front of groups, address a wide range of intellectual and practical problems, use data analysis tools (SAS, R, and Tableau), and compose complex publications including health reports and health profiles. This position requires staff to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and follow internal and external data protection policies. Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation with adequate insurance and ability to travel.

Compensation

This is a full-time salaried position based on skills and experience, located in our Madison, Wisconsin office, with a pay range of $65,000 – $75,000 annually with benefits including paid time off (PTO) in the form of annual and personal leave; paid holidays; insurance benefits including health, dental, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term (STD) and long-term (LTD) disability insurance; health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), and 401(k) retirement plan. When traveling for work, eligible expenses are reimbursed based on GSA rates. Drug and background check is required before hire.

Work is performed in an office environment with minimal exposure to injury. This is not a remote position. This position requires bending and being able to lift to 15-20 pounds. Regular work hours are normally Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a minimum of 40 hours per week. There will be some variation in working hours and demand due to special projects, deadlines, travel, and other responsibilities. The central office is in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, with satellite offices in Ann Arbor, Michigan; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Green Bay, Wisconsin; and Madison, Wisconsin. Again, this is not a remote position. This is a full-time, in-office position, and the expectation is to be available for in-office work. This position requires travel to attend industry, community, and program-related activities. Drug and background screening is required before hiring.
