Security Officer
FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Hours: Part-Time - up to 29 hours per week, days, nights, weekends, and holidays (as required)
This is a second shift position 3:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.
Compensation: Starting at $18.00
The Grand Rapids Public Museum is the oldest and second-largest museum in the state of Michigan. We are a place of never-ending learning and discovery, with programs and exhibits focusing on history, science, and culture. The employee culture of the GRPM is one of teamwork, excitement, and learning. As an integral part of the West Michigan community, the Museum is open daily to visitors and hosts after-hours public events and programs, as well as private events and weddings. The entire GRPM team works to create positive visitor experiences through engaging exhibits and programs, and a safe, clean, welcoming space.
SUMMARY: In this role, you will serve as the first response for the safety and security of visitors and staff while adhering to all Museum policies and procedures. You will foster a spirit of performance excellence with a focus on providing great experiences for Museum guests. This position reports directly to the
Security Manager and/or the Assistant Security Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES including, but not limited to :
● The ability to monitor and respond to alarms.
● Capable of responding to emergencies including medical.
● Must remain on Museum property during the entire shift.
● Ability to visually monitor computerized perimeter, fire, smoke, HVAC, and CCTV systems for warning bells, buzzers, and blinking lights.
● Capability to notify police, fire, and medical personnel as needed.
● Be able to conduct watch tours by executing key box systems located throughout the building.
During this tour, inspect exterior and interior doors, exhibition areas, work areas, and lighted sensors and detectors.
● Report to the supervisor about any problems or irregularities and take corrective measures.
● Investigate complaints regarding thefts, potential safety and fire hazards, injuries to staff and visitors, and other security issues that arise.
● Ensure that staff and visitors comply with the Museum and City of Grand Rapids security and safety regulations.
● The ability to write, calculate, and submit clear and concise security logs, journals, and other related reports as needed.
● Monitor the entrance/exit of staff, volunteers, vendors, contractors, and others into and out of the building and parking ramp.
● Maintain training in CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid.
● Issue badges, and keys, and accept and sign for deliveries.
● Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

● Ability to read blueprints and schematic drawings as related to the security and HVAC systems.
● Familiarity with Google Workspace (i.e. checking emails weekly).
EXPERIENCE:
● Two years experience in security services or public-related fields or a combination of both.
QUALIFICATIONS:
● Ability to demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
● Proficient in managing time, projects, processes, and resources to produce desired outcomes.
● Demonstrate strong written and organizational skills with attention to detail.
● Proven ability to function effectively in a team environment, as well as work independently.
● Ability to work tactfully, and effectively and follow both oral and written instructions.
● Ability to be flexible and maintain a positive attitude.
● A Michigan driver’s license is required.
EDUCATION:
● High School Diploma or equivalent.
● Certification in CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid is preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
● Must be able to move, bend, stoop, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds.
● Must be able to walk up and down stairs and sit for prolonged periods.
