Elkhart County Special Education Cooperative (ECSEC)

Deaf & Hard of Hearing Teacher

The Elkhart County Special Education Cooperative (ECSEC) is made up of the Baugo, Concord, Fairfield, Goshen, Middlebury, and Wa-Nee Community Schools in North Central Indiana located 30 minutes from the University of Notre Dame. Administrative offices are located at 1216 S. Indiana Avenue, Goshen, IN 46526.

POSITION PURPOSE: Teaches elementary and secondary school subjects to students with hearing impairments using various methods of communication to receive and convey language.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

  • Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional materials according to grade level students utilizing visual media such as computer, film television, and charts.
  • Confers with committee of parents, administrators, deafness specialists, social workers, regular education teachers, and educational interpreters to develop individual educational program.
  • Instructs in academic subjects or instructs students using various forms of communication such as gestures, sign language, finger spelling, speech clues.
  • Encourages students to participate in verbal communication, classroom learning experiences to ensure their comprehension of subject matter, development of social skills, and ability to communicate in situations encountered in daily living.
  • Instructs students to care for hearing aids to ensure hearing aids are functioning.
  • Attends and interprets lectures and instructs students enrolled in regular class.
  • Teaches parents how to participate in and enhance students learning experience.
  • Promote success of all DHH staff and students by managing fiscal resources aligned with the vision and mission of the cooperative.
  • Promotes successful implementation of ECSEC D/HH needs of students and staff through assistance and communication with D/HH program coordinator.
  • Demonstrates ongoing professional practice through participation in workshops, research, D/HH Roundtable meetings, Indiana School for the Deaf Outreach, and the Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
  • Provides support and training for job situations.
  • Knows and implements emergency procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information regarding students.
  • Collects and summarize student progress data.
  • Hold Annual Case Reviews by annual due date and facilitate case conferences.
  • Display flexibility to adapt to changing needs of students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Supervises teaching assistants, Educational Interpreters and volunteer staff within the D/HH program. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

REQUIREMENTS: Appropriate certification as required by the Indiana Department of Education.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to prepare written reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with groups of students, parents, and school staff.
  • Skills in human relations. Demonstrate the ability to cooperate with administration, staff, families.
  • Ability to plan and organize; good work habits.
  • Ability to accept constructive feedback.
  • Ability to communicate using sign language.
  • Demonstrates willingness to improve.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations requiring decision making.
  • Demonstrates punctuality.
  • Dress appropriately in accordance with building policy/expectations.
  • Wear footwear that provides protection/support in the event a staff member may need to move quickly, i.e. no open toe shoes.
  • Other qualifications that the Governing Council may require.

WORK CALENDAR: School year - 184 days per year; 40 hours per week

SALARY: Teaching Contract – 184 days
