JOB DESCRIPTION – INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT

FULL TIME, 181 WORKDAYS (AUGUST 8, 2024 TO JUNE 6, 2025)REPORTS TO ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR

Overview

Goethe International Charter School (GICS) is an independent charter school currently serving grades TK-8 based on the International Baccalaureate Primary Years, International Baccalaureate Middle Years and a dual language immersion program (German/English), preparing its students for life in a global society. We are serving about 450 students in a happy, healthy, small yet academically rigorous learning environment. Our students are proud to perform on a high academic level and our team has been honored with multiple awards over the years.

For the 2024-2025 school year we continue to co-locate with the Marina del Rey Middle School in Del Rey. GICS strives to establish itself as the most internationally minded school choice in Los Angeles for a continued K-8 education following the International Baccalaureate Primary and Middle Years programs. Our team currently consists of 40 members of faculty and staff, led by the Executive Director.

About the Position

At GICS, we believe in a small learning environment for our students. Our Instructional Assistants complement our teachers in the classroom to achieve a low adult to student ratio. They assist and support the classroom teacher with instructional activities, material and class preparation, data collection, organization, clerical work, recess duty, behavioral support, social/emotional support and whole school initiatives.

Ideally you have experience as an Instructional Assistant, and you have a deep appreciation for elementary students. Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material, subject area content and skills.
  • Perform clerical, classroom maintenance, and instructional duties as assigned by the classroom teacher.
  • Observe students and assist in the supervision and modeling of appropriate student behavior through positive reinforcement techniques and implementation of a teacher designed behavior management system.
  • Alert classroom teacher of any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in the school environment and community.
  • Confer with teachers concerning student progress and determine programs, activities and materials to meet individual student needs.
  • Refrain from using personal electronic devices for purposes unrelated to assigned duties during the workday.
  • Assist in monitoring the safety of students in various educational settings, including before school, and during snack, recess, lunch, pick up and drop off.
  • Assist with set-up/take down of valet area
  • Attend trainings, workshops, and staff development meetings as required.
  • Assist teacher in the implementation of students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), emergency health care plans, and classroom/individual behavior plans.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Principal.

Requirements

  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups;
  • Effective communication skills in oral and written form in English and a second language, if required by the assignment;
  • Ability to perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment;
  • Willing to learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of a positive educational environment;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults.
  • High School diploma with 48 college units or AA degree
  • TB and DOJ Clearance
  • Experience with students; experience with special education students preferred
  • Very good knowledge of English grammar and spelling
  • Languages: English required and German or Spanish preferred

Salary

  • $19.75 per hour
  • Full time
  • 34 hours per week
  • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 7:45 AM to 3:15 PM; Tuesday 7:45 AM to 2:15 PM
