Girl Scouts San Diego Summer Camp Positions is Hiring an Unit Director - Sleepaway Camp Near San Diego, CA

Job Description:

Wonderful things can happen in the summertime! Creating impactful programs and supervising a passionate team you can utilize your skills for a valuable experience at Girl Scouts Summer Camp!

Choose from one of our two beautiful Julian properties and join us in leading unforgettable adventures in the great outdoors.

Camp Winacka - A traditional rustic camp with spectacular views. The camp features a pool, miles of hiking trails, green building including a new environmental center and two lakes. Campers choose from programs focusing on aquatics, horses, arts and adventure. Campers and staff sleep in open-air cabins with built-in bunk beds, in platform tents with bunk beds or on cots under the stars.

Camp Whispering Oaks - Features a sports field and basketball court tucked amongst oak and pine trees, unique stargazing venues, abundant wildlife and a small, close-knit camp community. Campers choose from programs focusing on science and space, outdoor skills, sports, theater and the arts. Campers and staff sleep in fully enclosed indoor cabins with electricity and paved, lighted pathways winding through native manzanita, oak and pine trees.

Your summer will look like this:
You will be responsible for supporting and directing the work and growth of unit counselors, coordinating with other areas of camp operations, supporting program activities, and maintaining high standards of health and safety.

  • Ensure staff development of unit counselors under direct supervision
  • Oversee all assigned programs and unit counselors. Monitor work schedules for assigned unit staff
  • Supervise and evaluate unit staff to establish unit goals; conduct regularly scheduled staff check-ins to support unit counselors. Keep staff informed of plans, changes in plans, camp activities and policies/procedures that affect them
  • Collaborate with campers, other unit staff and program specialists, supports development of a unit schedule to meet the session goals of the unit
  • Monitor session programs to ensure balanced types of activities appropriate to age of campers and adhere to camp goals and objectives
  • Assist campers and staff with personal and/or health problems when needed; consult with healthcare supervisor and/or camp administrative team when appropriate
  • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to resident camp director
  • Assure that campers are properly supervised at all times; observe and implement all safety guidelines as outlined in Safety Activity Checkpoints, ACA and camp operational procedures
  • Assist program director in planning and execution of camp-wide activities, including but not limited to all-camps, campfires, theme meals, and other programs
  • Facilitate evaluation process with campers; monitor and review written summary of camper evaluations at the end of each session to include recommendations for future camp programs and operations
  • Conduct accurate inventory
  • Perform other duties, as assigned

    Experience and Skills:

    • Here’s what it takes:

      • Must be at least 18 years of age.
      • Ability to interact with all age levels.
      • Minimum one-year camp or supervisory experience
      • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, or able to obtain certification before the first day of work.
      • Valid drivers’ license, proof of insurance and access to reliable transportation. Daily and/or occasional travel may be required. Must be comfortable driving narrow, winding mountain roads with passengers in mini or cargo vans.
      • Belief in the mission and values of Girl Scouting; be willing to subscribe to the principles expressed in the Promise and Law and Girl Scouts San Diego mission, vision and values.
