Girl Scouts of Western Washington is Hiring a Camper Behavior Specialist- Summer Season 2024 Near Allyn, WA

Description

This summer, Girl Scouts of Western Washington (GSWW) is offering the exciting opportunity for staff to experience summer at a beautiful lakefront camp property in Western Washington. Camp staff will live on-site at Camp St. Albans, at the base of the Olympic mountains on Lake Devereaux in Allyn, Washington. Camp staff will attend paid staff training.

The Camper Behavior Specialist is responsible for oversight of the emotional well-being of campers and assisting staff to create a positive camper experience. This position will work with campers, their caregivers, and camp staff to create a meaningful camp experience. The Camp Behavior Specialist will also act as a resource to support staff in problem-solving and programming with campers who have special behavioral care needs. This position will also respond to in-the-moment behavior challenges and will coordinate care plans as needed with camper caregivers and/or the camp management team. Individuals in this position can work with varying age groups and program areas, as well as in various parts of camp every week.

General Responsibilities 

  • Provide leadership and direction for staff working with campers who need specialized attention 
  • Promote highly positive behavior interventions in which campers thrive 
  • Design and implement behavioral intervention techniques at camp, including training camp staff as appropriate 
  • Assist unit staff with campers who are having a difficult time 
  • Ability to plan individual interventions for campers 
  • Ability to communicate and work with participating groups and provide necessary instructions to campers, volunteers, and staff members regarding intervention plans 
  • Ability to communicate with caregivers to develop care plans to meet the needs of the campers 
  • Ensure work, living and activity areas are safe and meet the requirements of the American Camp Association, Girl Scouts of the USA Safety Activity Checkpoints, and GSWW 
  • Observe and assess camper behavior for appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques 
  • Prepare for and participate enthusiastically in all aspects of camp life 
  • Complete paperwork in a timely fashion, including Incident Reports
  • Carry out established duties regarding camper health, safety, and program goals 
  • Encourage respect for self, others, individual property, and the environment 
  • Responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with fellow staff and creating harmonious relationships with campers, parents/guardians, and staff 
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior, including but not limited to demonstrating maturity, effective communication techniques, cleanliness, good hygiene, punctuality, sportsmanship, sharing, and following camp policies 
  • Provide quality guest service that resolves concerns by offering creative solutions promptly 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and experience with “at risk” and/or “behaviorally challenged” youth/teens along with an understanding of current mitigation strategies 
  • Desire and ability to supervise and instruct children of various ages in an outdoor setting while living in a communal space with the youth 
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain 
  • High school graduate or equivalent 
  • At least 18 years of age 
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activities 
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant, 24-hour supervision of campers 
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control 
  • Ability to receive instruction and supervision 
  • Exhibits good judgment and risk management assessment skills 
  • Ability to work with, communicate with, and teach children ages 6-17 
  • Must reside on camp property while campers are on site and camp is in session 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous Girl Scout camp and/or overnight camp experience 
  • Knowledge of Girl Scout programming, awards, and culture
  • Comfort with and ability to perform/teach various camp activities such as boating, crafts, outdoor cooking, chopping wood, fire building, etc.
  • Ability to communicate and work with staff and campers from diverse backgrounds productively and collaboratively 
  • Valid Driver’s license and clean driving record 
  • 25 years of age
