Girl Scouts of Western Washington is Hiring a Boating Specialist- Summer Season 2024 Near Allyn, WA

Description

This summer, Girl Scouts of Western Washington (GSWW) is offering the exciting opportunity for staff to experience summer at a beautiful lakefront camp property in Western Washington. Camp staff will live on-site at Camp St. Albans, at the base of the Olympic mountains on Lake Devereaux in Allyn, Washington. Camp staff will attend paid staff training.

The Boating Specialist works directly with the Waterfront Director to ensure a safe and fun environment for boating at camp St. Albans. The Boating Specialist will spend their days supervising staff and campers during boating activities at the camp waterfront, including, but not limited to, canoes, paddle boards, or other boating activities with a group. The Boating Specialist also sleeps in overnight camp units to help supervise campers in the evening and participate in various aspects of camp life with that unit. When not at the waterfront they will provide as needed support to Unit Counselors. The Boating Specialist adds to the harmonious camp operations by exhibiting positive camper engagement.

General Responsibilities

  • Ensure work areas and activities are safe and meet the requirements of the American Camp Association and Girl Scouts of Western Washington 
  • Ensure boating and waterfront facilities, equipment, and supplies are maintained in the best possible working order, along with reporting any repairs needed to the appropriate camp staff 
  • Responsible for boating and lifeguarding per American Red Cross Certification standards, American Camp Association standards, and Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints 
  • Maintain visual and auditory awareness of all participants in the assigned waterfront area 
  • Train camp staff and ensure they are teaching appropriate techniques for boating
  • When not at the waterfront, assist Unit Counselors with the supervision of campers during various activities including wake-up, kapers, meals, camp activities, etc.
  • Observe and assess camper behavior for appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques 
  • Participate in all aspects of camp life, including meals, overnight camping trips, activities, campfire, staff training, meetings, clean-up of camp, and camp closing 
  • Complete paperwork in a timely fashion, including Incident Reports and evaluations

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • 18
  • American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard certification or willingness to obtain 
  • American Red Cross Safety Qualified in Canoeing, Kayaking and Boating (or approved equivalent under Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints and the American Camp Association) or willingness to obtain 
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to perform rescues in cold water
  • Exhibits good judgment and risk management assessment skills 
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to waterfront activities
  • Ability to hike 5 miles of uneven terrain 
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Lifeguard experience 
  • Experience using canoes, using row boats, kayaks and/or stand-up paddle boards in a flat-water environment 
  • Experience teaching boating techniques and equipment usage 
  • Previous Girl Scouts or overnight camp experience
