Description

Position Summary

The Activity Leader is responsible for the development and implementation of high-quality climbing wall, low ropes course, and archery programming that meet the goals of the camp and Council and meet the standards and guidelines of GSGLA, GSUSA, ACA, and the State of California. Training provided for each focus area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers throughout the camp to meet the intended camper outcomes. 
    • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth. 
    • Ensure campers are always properly supervised. 
    • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines. 
    • Develop and implement a climbing wall and ropes course program that is based on sound educational principles, offers a progression of skills, and is based on the interests and abilities of campers. 
  • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes. 
    • Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities. 
    • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned. 
    • Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities. 
    • Assist in program areas such as archery, rock wall climbing and all camp activities, as directed. 
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff. 
    • Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs. 
    • Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by the Health and Inclusion Supervisor. 
    • Be alert to campers’ and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss with Health and Inclusion Supervisor and/or Program Specialist when appropriate. 
    • Establish and monitor safety procedures for climbing wall and ropes course program according to Girl Scout and ACA standards including the training of campers. 
    • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to the Camp Experience Manager.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior. 
    • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures. 
    • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver evening programs, special events, and other all-camp activities and camp functions. 
    • Attendandparticipate in daily meetings. 
    • Provide check in/out support and provide outstanding customer service to families.
  • Responsible for taking care of special programming equipment and supplies. 
    • Set up and break down climbing wall and archery range in orderly fashion including the maintenance of accurate inventories of supplies and equipment. 
    • Prepares opening and closing inventories of climbing wall/archery equipment and supplies.
    • Evaluates and reports as requested by the Camp Experience Manager or other administrative staff. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

GSGLA El Ranchito Day Camp

Tucked away in the charming suburbs of Long Beach, El Ranchito is a tree-lined high adventure day camp, where girls are encouraged to take safe risks that boost bravery and promote goal setting. Exciting, confidence-building outdoor activities include archery, low ropes, and a 32-foot climbing tower.

Qualifications


Qualifications (Minimum Education and Experience)

  • Must be 18 years of age or be a high school graduate by the start of camp.
  • Must be available for 9.5 weeks of day camp and training dates that will be scheduled before camp.
  • Documented experience teaching or interacting with youth programs 
  • Must submit health history form prior to first day of work. 
  • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend all pre-camp trainings. 
  • Must hold a valid CPR/First Aid Certification by the start of camp. Training will be available.

  • Compliance with State-mandated reporter requirements is an essential function of this position.
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and certain other activities/events (including cookie cupboards, etc.) as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • The incumbent must be able to visually monitor and physically assist campers weighing up to 200 lbs.
  • May lift to 50 lbs. periodically. If more, the incumbent must request assistance.
  • The incumbent must be able to perform this job safely, without endangering the health or safety of him/herself or others.
  • The incumbent must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. 
  • The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.
