Girl Scouts Hornets Nest Council is Hiring a Manager, Volunteer and Engagement Near Charlotte, NC

POSITION SUMMARY: The Volunteer Engagement Manager is responsible for executing volunteer engagement strategies. This role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality volunteer trainings, new volunteer roles, and other engagement opportunities. The Volunteer Engagement Manager will participate in community meetings and speaking engagements and organize other volunteer events to engage and educate volunteers. The Volunteer Engagement works collaboratively with her/his team and other team to ensure the success of the council’s goals and objectives.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and leadership by coaching team members in successful volunteer engagement strategies, skills, and communication.
  • Strengthen the council’s relationship with volunteers through appreciation and support.
  • Create an annual calendar of events, focusing on Volunteer Engagement initiatives.
  • Lead annual Service Team Awards process.
  • Collaborate with Service Teams, including, but not limited to: team member recruitment/appointment, training/coaching, networking, and support.
  • Organize, plan, and execute large events to inspire, engage, and educate volunteers, including, but not limited to: Service Team Conference, Core/Lead Summit.
  • Identify and lead annual volunteer appreciation initiatives, including gifts for Service Community Team members.
  • Create and manage engaging virtual training modules via gsLearn.
  • Guides all troop leaders to ensure correct on-boarding, assists with opening troop bank account, confirms completion of applicable trainings (i.e. troop management, grade-level, product program), and explains and discusses troop management.
  • Communicates applicable resources and instructions to access those resources (i.e. Volunteer Policies & Procedures, Safety Activity Checkpoints, etc.).
  • Conducts introductions between new troop leaders and the Community Membership Manager on staff, and the volunteer Service Unit director.
  • Becomes an expert in the Volunteer Toolkit to help troops take the lead with pre-set meeting plans, finance tab, calendar planning and communication with families.
  • Develops networking and education opportunities for new leaders to build relationships in the Girl Scout community and learn new skills.
  • Collaborates with program department to design, plan, and ensure execution of council-run programing for girls, including in-person and virtual program experiences.
  • Keeps current on organizational knowledge and best practices by participating in GSUSA webinars, participating in Chatter groups, and utilizing gsConnect.
  • Adheres to internal documented processes for record keeping, member registration, volunteer onboarding, and troop support.
  • Ensure that diversity and pluralism is embraced and incorporated into the daily work of the position.
  • Active participation in the development of environments that foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and access through words, actions, and attitude.
  • Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or higher or equivalent experiencewith four years of directly related work experience, and at least two years of managerial experience. Bachelor’s or higher or equivalent experience
  • Strong belief and support of the mission of Girl Scouts.
  • Demonstrated ability and sensitivity working with youth and persons of diverse backgrounds, cultures, lifestyles.
  • Experience in supervision and management of volunteers.


Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience leading/teaching in a virtual environment preferred.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking and networking skills required.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight, take initiative, self-managed and thrive in fast-paced environment is essential.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects with conflicting priorities while meeting deadlines is essential.
  • Highly developed people and project management skills, with demonstrated ability to build relationships.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Travel throughout council jurisdiction up to 20% of the time.
  • Capability to provide own transportation, and maintain valid operator license.


Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must be able to withstand:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Operate office equipment manually.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds at times.
