Outdoor Experience Specialist/Camp Director

OVERVIEW OF POSITION: The Outdoor Experience Specialist/Camp Director is responsible for planning and implementing educational year-round outdoor programming for girls. Individual is responsible for administrative responsibilities for the programs. The Outdoor Experience Specialist/Camp Director reports to the Camp Operations Executive.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibility Outdoor Experiences - Program Management
  • Plans, delivers and implements the Girl Scout National Outdoor Curriculum.
  • Ensures implementation and adherence to GSUSA Activity Safety Checkpoints and American Camp Association Accreditation Standards for all Camp Programs
  • Ensures that all programming is age-appropriate, developmentally progressive and provided in a safe and nurturing environment.
  • Ensures marketing/advertising plans are developed and initiated for all programs.
  • In partnership with Camp Ranger, ensures camp property meets cleanliness and readiness standards as set by Camp Operations Executive and Property Director.
  • Provides high-quality customer service to members, volunteers and parents.
  • Coordinates weekend activities and effectively communicates schedules with both staff and participants.
Outdoor Experiences - Volunteer Support
  • Provides support, training and information to volunteers/troop leaders so that they can deliver quality Girl Scout outdoor programming.
  • Attends Leader Meetings and Service Unit Manager Meetings to connect with adult Girl Scout members and actively promote Outdoor experiences and programs.
  • Assists with planning and execution of Service Unit Camporees or any large scale outdoor programs within the assigned geographic region.
  • Provides support to the GSCSNJ Adult Volunteer Outdoor Education program as assigned.
Summer Camp Business Responsibilities
  • With the Camp Operations Executive, designs and implements summer resident and day camp experiences that complement and reinforce the mission and programmatic goals of Girl Scouting.
  • Retains and recruits parents, campers, and potential staff through personal calls, mailing, tours, events, etc.
  • Serves as the on-site lead of the Council during Summer Camp operating hours, ensuring exceptional programming, first-class customer service, and responsiveness to parent concerns and needs.
  • Leads recruitment efforts and assists with marketing and social media to meet Summer Camp participation goals.
  • Secures, oversees and ensures compliance with vendor contracts as needed (e.g. busing, horseback riding, etc.).
  • Supervises expenditures to stay within supervisor’s budgetary requirements for the all council outdoor programs.
  • Responsible for annual program evaluation, member satisfaction surveys and other reporting as required.
Team Management and Leadership
  • Hire, coach and manage staff to ensure optimal performance. Activities include goal setting, assessment, and development.
  • Provide guidance to the team based on management directives and organizational vision.
  • Encourage and motivate team performance.
  • Coordinate activities of staff to ensure work is properly allocated and expectations are met.
Education, Experience, and Skill Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. Degrees in Education, Recreation Management, or Business preferred.
  • Meet ACA Director qualifications o At least two years prior seasons of administrative or supervisory experience (can be seasonal) in an organized camp o Completes an average of five hours per year of professional development that addresses the individual’s needs related to the ACA core competencies o Is at least 25 years of age
  • Technical computer skills in Google G Suite for documents, spreadsheets and presentations, customer relationship management systems, and social networking. Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies with ability to understand basic data quality principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of American Camp Association Accreditation guidelines and local and state regulations preferred
  • Preferred Certifications: o CPR and First Aid Trainer Certification o Lifeguard - Small Watercraft Safety o American Archery Instructor o ACCT level 1 Certifications

Physical Requirements: For office-based positions, the general physical expectations are that:
  • Individuals will be able to read materials and respond in writing or verbally.
  • Individuals will actively participate in meetings in person or over the phone.
  • Individuals will be able to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other office equipment.
  • Individuals will primarily perform tasks at a sitting desk. Individuals will move around the office as needed to gather files, attend meetings, etc.
Other expectations for this job include:
  • Occasional lifting up to 30 pounds of paper, products or equipment.
  • Participation in activities as able.
Reasonable accommodations will be provided as needed.
Other Expectations:
  • Position requires frequent evenings and weekends
  • Frequent overnights required during Summer Camp Operational Season (June - August). Must be able to sleep on-site during the overnight camping.
  • Reliable transportation for travel within the assigned geographic region, valid driver’s license and insurable driving record (for driving Council vehicles as needed).
