The Paralegal I performs under the supervision of the Protective Services Supervising Attorney or designee and conducts research, prepares legal documents, and assists attorneys with case management.

· Works closely with attorneys in gathering and preparing confidential legal documents that are sensitive materials that may be emotionally traumatic and graphic, and maintains statutorily required confidentiality of all case matters.

· Assists with sensitive and moderately complex cases involving child welfare, juvenile offenders, adult in need of care matters and Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) ligations.

· Assists attorneys in preparation of hearings and trials, and ensures completeness and appropriateness of file documentation.

· Files court documents both electronically and physically.

· Enters data and tracks statistical information for monthly reports.

· Schedules and prioritizes attorney caseload; organizes case files; prepares chronologies, fact summaries, and witness files.

· Coordinates witness and victim interviews.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

· Considerable knowledge of law office practices, terminology and legal procedures.

· Knowledge of and experience in application of the principles of jurisprudence and legal analysis.

· Knowledge of and experience in conducting legal research.

· Ability to prioritize work projects, plan and carry out assignments.

· Ability to prepare reports.

· Ability to maintain composure while working with individuals in a heightened emotional state under strict time constraints.

· Ability to work both independently and in intensive concert with others.

· Ability to keep work projects organized and prioritize work assignments.

· Ability to work and support the culture of the workplace and agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace following the Community’s policies and procedures.

· Ability to communicate effectively with law enforcement agencies, court personnel, victim and witness advocates, other counsel, witnesses, victims, other Community departments and the public.

Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in paralegal studies, legal assistance or a closely related field and two (2) years’ experience working with legal procedures, terminology, legal research and preparing legal documents in a legal environment; or any combination of education, training, or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position. Some experience working in a law office preferred.

· Required to pass a background check and fingerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must continue to maintain throughout duration of employment.

· Background checks are required for positions that involve regular contact with or control over Community Children in accordance with_ The Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, 25 U.S.C. Sections 3201 through 3210 and C.F.R. Part 63 _and positions that have regular contact with the Elderly.

· Paralegal certification through a school approved through the American Bar Association or certification through the National Association for Legal Assistants is preferred.

· Required to obtain a Tribal Operator’s permit. Valid state driver’s license with a current proof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the application.
