General Description:

Operates and performs preventative maintenance on high pressure boilers, refrigeration units, gas and water turbines, electrical production, and potable water systems. Performs water analysis and chemical treatment of operating systems. Records operational data and technical information electronically. Performs maintenance and repairs on utility plant equipment and systems to promote safe and efficient operations of high-pressure steam boilers, refrigeration units, potable water systems, electricity production systems and associated equipment and automatic door systems.

Essential Functions:

  • Operates, cleans, and performs preventative maintenance on rotating and stationary equipment, to include high pressure boilers, gas turbines, industrial chillers, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Operates boilers and auxiliary equipment, and controls the generation of steam, chilled water, electricity, and compressed air through the use of programmable logic controllers or desktop computer-based controls.
  • Operates controls and adjusts machinery to generate electric power, using control boards or semiautomatic equipment; monitors control and switchboard gauges to determine if electrical power distribution meets specifications.
  • Operates, cleans, and performs preventative maintenance on various kinds of refrigeration units, to include absorption, centrifugal, and heat exchanges.
  • Starts, stops, and reconfigures chilled water production to maintain the most efficient operating parameters necessary to meet the changing needs of the facility.
  • Tests and controls the chemistry of boiler water, condensate, and colling tower water.
  • Continuously monitors various gauges and automatic recording devices at specified times to assess operating conditions; records operational data, to include equipment temperatures, pressures, hours of operation, fuel consumption, water levels, water consumption, and electrical production and usage.
  • Tests, operates, and performs preventative maintenance on emergency generators, logs results and other applicable information.
  • Examines machinery or mechanical equipment and identifies reason for malfunction, performs minor maintenance repairs to bring unit back online.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Enters technical information into a personal computer for the purpose of record keeping and preventative maintenance; uses and supports a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Assists as required with the training of lower-level technical staff in the maintenance of all plant equipment; occasionally supports and assists maintenance personnel in the performance of their duties.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Education & Training Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 4 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. A degree in a maintenance related field may substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis.
  • NM Journeyman license preferred in (Electrical or HVAC or General Construction); experience in these areas may substitute for the required license.
  • Current and valid NM Class C Driver’s license required
  • Must meet insurance requirement to drive hospital vehicles
  • Must be able to work with hand and power tools, supplies, and equipment necessary to perform required operations.
  • Must be mechanically oriented and have knowledge of maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Must understand the basic functions and hazards of electricity.
  • Ability to read and understand the instruction labels on maintenance chemicals and supplies.
  • Computer experience
  • Ability to physically enter HVAC air handlers
  • Ability to use rules, calipers, micrometers, and other related measuring tools.
  • Ability to perform inspection and make necessary adjustments to conform to job specifications
