Project/Unit Description

The Applied Embedded Systems (AES) division of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) supports multiple research products and projects in concert with development teams who are building complex, multi-faceted embedded and electronic systems. AES predominantly focuses on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), Radar, command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other applications. This research position will support electronic hardware development needs of the Open Systems Development Branch (OSDB). This includes developing hardware from existing open standards such as OpenVPX as well as developing hardware that is driving new open standards.

Job Purpose

The Systems Engineer oversees and coordinates the work of technical teams on systems projects, ensuring the successful design, implementation, operation, and technical management of those projects. Taking a holistic approach to systems engineering, the Systems Engineer ensures that all aspects of a system project are considered and addressed. The Systems Engineer works closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and then develops and documents technical requirements that meet those needs. The Systems Engineer leads the design team in developing a system architecture that meets all of the requirements. After the system is designed, the Systems Engineer oversees the implementation of the system, working with the implementation team to ensure that it meets all of the requirements. Once the system is deployed, the Systems Engineer manages the technical aspects of the system, including monitoring performance, troubleshooting problems, and making improvements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate product or system requirements gathering and analysis with sponsors and other key stakeholders
  • Verify systems engineering product life-cycle components to include definitions, requirements analysis, synthesis, systems analysis and implementation
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis translating requirements into physical architectures for systems of moderate complexity to include defining and refining internal and external interfaces
  • Develop and contribute to technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes
  • Analyze product or system functionality as defined by requirements
Additional Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and composition of new/updated open standards
  • Lead technical meetings with GTRI and sponsor personnel, and support issue tracking and hardware development planning
  • Lead proposal efforts or new research areas suitable for internal research and development (IR&D) funding
  • Lead teams of electrical and mechanical researchers in support of sponsored research efforts
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with open hardware standards (e.g. OpenVPX)
  • Experience developing hardware for embedded environments, including but not limited to FPGA designs, analog/digital circuits, or other embedded hardware
  • Knowledge of computer architectures as it relates to embedded hardware and communications standards (e.g., Ethernet, PCI Express)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Experience with Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) or other forms of open systems management
  • Experience with high-speed processing, especially signal processing
  • Knowledge of avionics protocols and interfaces, including but not limited to ARINC- and VITA-standard protocols, serial, discrete signal, MIL-STD-1553 and/or analog interfaces
