As an accredited public health department, we're seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Food Service Program Consultant to join the Environmental Health Section in Atlanta, GA.  For more information about how Environmental Health impacts the communities we serve, click here: https://youtu.be/x18wNgubfi8 
  • Provides oversight to Department review and approval/denial process for food service HACCP plans and variances.
  • Serves as a technical expert in complex Specialized Food Processes that require a HACCP plan and/or Variance under state and/or federal guidelines (FDA Food Code). 
  • Assess Environmental Health (EH) food service program needs of the target population.
  • May assist with budget preparation and monitoring in assigned EH program area.
  • Compiles reports of findings and submits in appropriate format.
  • Coordinates environmental health program services with other providers, organizations, regulated communities, and the general public to promote optimal implementation of program services.
  • Establishes effective communication with district/county EHS in assigned program area.
  • Develops long-term (five year) and short-term (one year) objectives and plans for the environmental health food service program.
  • Develops policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines for the development and implementation of the EH food service program statewide.
  • Assists with monitoring, assessing, and evaluating the food service program.
  • Assists with monitoring, assessing, and evaluating the performance of inspections to determine compliance with departmental policies/procedures, state and/or federal guidelines.
  • Plans, supervises, coordinates, and implements educational and training programs for district/county EHS in food service regulations/inspections.
  • Plans, supervises, coordinates, and implements educational and training programs for district/county EHS in other EH programs as needed.
  • Provides technical assistance and advice to district/county EHS to develop, implement and improve EH food service inspection programs.
  • Provides technical assistance and advice to district/county EHS to develop, implement and improve other EH programs as needed.
  • Maintains professional knowledge of current laws, policies, trends, and developments in the environmental health field and applies knowledge to the performance of other responsibilities.
  • Research, prepares and administers grant proposals, and contracts for EH services.
  • Provides technical expertise to district and county EHS in the review and interpretation of state and federal laws, regulations and policies related to the environmental health food service program.
Master's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND Three years of experience performing work related to area of assignment, One year of which in a supervisory role
OR
Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND Five years of experience performing work related to area of assignment, Two of which were in a supervisory role
OR
One year at the lower level (HCP092) or position equivalent.
Note: Some positions may require licensure.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Currently Standardized as a District Trainer with a minimum of 1-2 years actively standardizing other Environmental Health Specialists (EHS) in the Food Service Inspection Program OR Currently a Standardized Inspection Officer with 3-5 years of performing Food Service Inspections along with 2 years training other EHS in the Food Service Inspection Program OR Currently an FDA Standardized Inspection Officer 
  • Experience reviewing complex plans, requests, and reports (HACCP Plans, Emergency Operations Plans/Water Interruption Plans, Lab Reports, Challenge Studies, and Variance Requests).
  • Experience developing and facilitating classroom and virtual training in food service laws, regulations, and inspections for regulatory or EHS staff.
  • Experience developing and facilitating training (virtual or in-person) for industry professionals.
  • Knowledge of Georgia’s Food Service Rules and Regulations (Chapter 511-6-1).
  • Knowledge and experience with one of FDA’s Food Code versions 2013, 2017 or 2022.
  • Knowledge of Georgia’s Environmental Health “Standardization Procedures”.
  • Knowledge and experience with FDA’s Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards.
  • Knowledge of FDA’s Standard 2 “Trained Regulatory Staff” and their model for standardization of regulatory staff.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Excellent leadership and confidence giving others guidance and/or direction.
  • Attention to detail with strong research capabilities.
  • Verbal and written communication.
Georgia Department of Public Health Commissioner and leaders encourage all employees to engage in regular wellness activities and to make lifestyle choices that promote health and well-being.
The use of wellness breaks during the workday is authorized to support this philosophy and assist employees in meeting their wellness goals. A maximum of 30 minutes in a given workday may be used to engage in wellness activities, generally in the form of two 15-minute breaks or one 30-minute break.
Employment Information
All approved teleworking employees must reside within the state of Georgia and depending on the responsibilities of the position, must live within reasonable driving distance of the agency’s primary worksite and beable to report to the office when required. Current State employees are subject to State Personnel Board rules regarding salary.
DPH accepts educational credential recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the US Department of Education (DOE) will be considered. DPH will contact educational institutions to verify degree, diploma, licensure, etc.
