Job Overview
This Access Services Specialist supports the teaching, learning, and research of Georgetown University community and the University Library's mission as an agile organization providing preeminent services, collections and spaces. Responsibilities include but are not limited to processing course reserves, training, supervising, assigning, and monitoring the work of student employees at the Circulation Desk, Resource Sharing Services, and in the Print Collections units; providing re
search assistance to GU faculty, students, staff, and the public.
This Access Services Specialist opens the department on Sundays and is the primary, only full-time Library employee in the building on that day, and ensures the department meets patron needs by providing preeminent services, collections and space. They are solely responsible for managing and supervising all aspects of departmental operations and processes on Sundays, interpreting and applying departmental and library policies and resolving non-routine problems in the absence of the Department Head.
This Access Services Specialist reports building function issues to GU and Library Facilities, security issues to GUPD, technology issues to Library Information Technologies, and medical issues to GERMS.
The work schedule for this Access Services Specialist is Sunday 11:30 am to 8pm and Monday through Thursday 10:30 am to 7:00 pm. Assignments will vary to address cyclical and priority needs of the department and the work schedule adjusted when the library is closed on a weekend.
Work Interactions
The Access Services Specialist reports directly to the Circulation Desk/Course Reserves Supervisor who reports directly to the Access Services Department Head, along with 6.0 FTE positions. They play a key role in the academic success of faculty pedagogy and undergraduate and graduate student learning and research - by managing and supervising Access Services Department operations on the weekend and weekday evenings, and by providing support in the Circulation Desk/ Course Reserves, Resource Sharing Services, Print Collections units during the work week. Additionally, they interact daily with the Georgetown University community and the public, and using excellent customer service skills and consistently providing the highest level of quality service to library users.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree
2 years library experience - preferably in an academic setting
Demonstrated familiarity with the role of academic libraries meeting the information needs of students, faculty, and staff
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated successful experience working with the public, training and supervising student employees
Demonstrated sound judgment when interpreting policies and explaining procedures
Ability to work both independently with little supervision as well as in a team environment
Ability to set priorities, make decisions on a variety of complex matters, and work under time constraints to meet deadlines
Experience with MS Office, integrated library systems, Google Sheets, course management system, and streaming media software.
Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and ability to work effectively with a diverse Faculty, students, and staff
Willingness and availability to work the schedule as described above
