We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received over $420 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with over 250 employees.

The Role:

We are seeking a visionary and strategic leader to fill the role of Vice President, Machine Learning Strategy and Operations at Generate. As the VP of Machine Learning Strategy and Operations, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the continued evolution of Generate's machine learning platform towards maximizing impact on therapeutic and other applications and continuing to position us as technology leaders in the field. You will be a critical thought partner to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and the leadership team, contributing to key decision-making processes and helping chart the course for our machine learning endeavors across the organization.

Here's how you will contribute:

  • Strategic Thought Leadership:
    • Collaborate closely with the CTO and leadership team to develop and execute strategies for the deployment of machine learning, both for and beyond protein generation. This will include identifying opportunities to integrate ML into manufacturing and clinical applications.
    • Shape the organization's positioning as technology leaders in the machine learning field. Develop and implement strategies to showcase our advancements and contributions to the broader industry.
    • Contribute to the talent strategy within machine learning and the continued growth of the group, considering how it aligns with other critical components such as positioning, publication strategy, and communication efforts.
    • Explore the potential of new business concepts (e.g., platform-as-a-service, partnerships around key data or data-generation capabilities) and potential applications of ML to new domains.
    • Identify opportunities to enhance dry-wet lab integration or invest in new data-generation streams and strategize ways to scale existing data streams effectively.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Serve as a liaison between the Computational Sciences department and various stakeholders within the organization, including the leadership team, board of directors, Digital, Communications, Legal, and other business units. Facilitate effective communication and alignment of goals.
    • Collaborate with the strategy and business arms of the organization to ensure that machine learning strategies are tightly integrated into the overall corporate vision and objectives.
  • External Engagement:
    • Participate in business development conversations with external partners to explore potential collaborations and partnerships in the field of machine learning.
    • Contribute to the development of the organization's partnership strategy, with a particular focus on data partnerships to enhance our machine learning capabilities.
    • Further develop the relationship with Flagship Pioneering, Generate's founding company, especially around applications of ML and engagements that benefit both Generate and the broader Flagship ecosystem. This may also include participation in Flagship advisory boards and leading partnerships between Generate and other Flagship teams.

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Proven track record of strategic leadership in the machine learning domain, preferably in a research-intensive or technology-driven organization.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to align technical innovations with corporate goals.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and leading cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration, and driving results.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A visionary mindset with the capacity to anticipate trends and opportunities in the machine learning landscape.

Who Will Love This Job:

If you are a passionate and dynamic leader with a strong background in machine learning and a strategic mindset, we encourage you to apply and be part of our exciting journey.
