General Dynamics Electric Boat is Hiring a COLUMBIA Class Construction Support Engineer Near Groton, CT

Overview

If so, D476 Groton COLUMBIA Construction Support Engineering is seeking highly motivated engineers to work hands on solving deck plate issues to do exactly that. With the primary responsibility of pro-actively supporting COLUMBIA Class construction efforts in the Groton shipyard, the Construction Support Engineering team provides direct support to the shipyard trades and support organizations to ensure the safe, efficient, and continuous completion of construction activities in a manner that results in delivery of ships consistent with the design intent. Construction Support Engineering is also responsible for supporting sea trials, with future opportunities to participate directly.

Day-to-day, Engineers will interface and grow working relationships with Operations, Ship's Management, Planning, Design and Engineering, Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP), and PMS397 to act as the primary engineering interface for the Groton shipyard as the COLUMBIA Waterfront engineering organization grows. D476 Groton COLUMBIA Construction Support Engineering also provides mentoring and training for engineers who are new to construction, and aims to foster a strong culture of teamwork, mutual support, and adept capability. Good communication skills, technical acumen, and reliable analytical and problem-solving ability is needed, and will be honed in this role.

This is a unique opportunity to support construction through final assembly, test, certification, sea trials and delivery of the first of class SSBN 826 COLUMBIA, the Nation’s #1 defense priority, on the front lines of engineering. This position is located in Groton, CT as part of D476 Construction Support Engineering.

Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Provide engineering oversight and assistance to trade personnel
  • Evaluate emergent shipyard issues that arise during construction and rapidly develop technically acceptable resolutions
  • Interpret design, drawing, and specification requirements
  • Providing direction and evaluation to Groton trades via disposition of CNs and TIR UNSATs
  • Support final assembly, test, certification, and delivery activities for COLUMBIA Class
  • Provide surveillance of manufacturing, inspection, and testing of material in the Groton shipyard
  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering evaluations
  • Facilitate implementation of the design, lessons learned, and process improvements
  • Facilitate discipline specific knowledge transfer to the construction support engineering team
  • Coordinate engagement of design and engineering SMEs in the construction sequence.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Structural, Civil or Marine
  • Three years of discipline specific (structural, mechanical, piping, ventilation or electrical) engineering experience is required
  • Ability to obtain a DOD Secret security clearance or higher is required

Preferred Skills / Experience:

  • Prior deck plate construction experience is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with Electronic Desktop (7G, Work Orders, ELCADD, ERS, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Team Center (CR/CN experience)
  • Prior US Navy experience
