Job Description
Basic Qualifications
Education/Training: RN, BSN required; valid Pennsylvania RN license; CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
Skill(s): Proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills; proficient interpersonal relations and communicative skills; ability to tolerate defiant and aggressive behavior and frequent stressful situations; proficient ability to evaluate medical problems and determine when a doctor’s care is needed; knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations relating to health care services for children and adolescents, including HIPAA confidentiality laws and
The Joint Commission Health Care Standards; knowledge of Crisis Prevention/Emergency
Safety Intervention; proficient PC skills, including Microsoft Office software; valid driver's license.
Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of related experience normally required; experience working with emotionally disturbed children preferred.
General Responsibilities
Responsible for administering nursing care to the children and adolescents of Martin Luther School and Residential Treatment program; coordinating work within the department, as well as with other departments/divisions; complying with operating policies and procedures established for the assigned function; communicating with appropriate personnel; responding to inquiries or requests for information; maintaining appropriate records and providing assigned reports.
Essential Duties
1. Supports the ministry and mission of Gemma Services-Martin Luther School by providing hope and healing through high quality mental health, educational, and supportive services for at-risk, vulnerable children and their families.
2. Administers nursing care to the children and adolescents of Silver Springs-Martin
Luther School as illustrated by the following: a. Administers First Aid as well as nursing care to injured, sick, or infirm children.
b. Evaluates all medical problems and informs Nurse Manager and
Executive-On-Duty (EOD)/Executive-On-Call (EOC) of specific
problems.
c. Prepares, administers, and records all individual medications; orders
and maintains correct medications for each child.
d. Transcribes all medication/treatment orders and initiates procedures.
e. Maintains children's Health Records, medication log, and
communications log. f. Secures and maintains children's immunization records and arranges for updating these immunizations, as required by law and recommended by the
American Academy of Pediatrics. g. For new admissions: completes nurse's admission history and physical; assembles Child Health Records; obtains and records past medical history; arranges for medical and dental examinations within regulatory guidelines; provides immunizations and lab work; obtains proper release forms.
h. Maintains all Joint Commission (TJC) Health Care Standards;
accurately records all information required for TJC Indicators for the
Health Care Management Committee (HCMC). i. Organizes, maintains, and follows schedule for all children for routine medical and dental exams, monthly blood tests, follow-up appointments, and referrals. j. Makes appointments at the clinic or other facilities for sick or injured children; accompanies child on these trips if necessary.
k. Completes Individual Service Plans (ISPs) as required by the agency and maintains quarterly reports for controlled substances. l. Updates medical and immunization records with all incoming information from parents/guardians, physicians, etc., and maintains current written prescriptions on file.
m. Obtains verbal orders authorizing physical restraints and conducts the
physical assessment of the child within 60 minutes of the end of the
restraint.
n. Prepares and dispenses all medications and supplies necessary for home
visits and excursions.
3. Abides by the current laws and organizational policies and procedures designed and implemented to promote an environment which is free of harassment and other forms of illegal discriminatory behavior in the work place.
4. Cooperates with, participates in, and supports the adherence to all internal policies, procedures, and practices in support of risk management and overall safety and soundness and the organization’s compliance with all regulatory requirements; participates in and completes all required training within stated Silver Springs training year.
5. Coordinates specific work tasks with other personnel within the department
as well as with other departments/divisions in order to ensure the smooth and
efficient flow of information.
6. Communicates with management and staff personnel in order to integrate goals and activities.
7. Responds to inquiries relating to his/her particular area, or to requests from other staff, etc., within given time frames and within established policy.
8. Maintains appropriate records and provides assigned reports.

1. Performs tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or re-designed depending upon individual circumstances.
Physical Requirements
Visual and auditory skills; ability to stand, sit, stoop, reach, climb, crawl, and lift items weighing 30 lbs. or less; ability to use physical re-direction and restraint techniques.
