JOB DESCRIPTION

Title of Position: Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

Location: Gateways Inpatient- Main Hospital

Exempt/Non-Exempt: Exempt, Full-Time

Union/ Non-Union: Non-Union

Supervisor: Meredith Mead MSN, PMHNP

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for completing assessment, examination, diagnosis, and treatment of both chronic and episodic disorders to assigned clients (adult and adolescent population); plans, implements, reviews, and confirms health care goals for assigned clients; remains responsible for the client(s) throughout the course of the treatment; determines when the client has recovered, and recommends release of the client. As appropriate, refer the client to physicians for consultation or to specialized health resources for treatment but retains responsibility for clinical management as well as any subsequent modification; may also review use and effects of psychotropic drugs and other medications as well as the characteristics of mental and emotional disorders. On-going collaboration with treatment team to assure effective communication and treatment goal implementation.

ESSENTIALS DUTIES:

  • Diagnose and treat acute, episodic, or chronic illnesses for adult and adolescent population
  • Prescribe/Titrate/Manage all necessary medications and treatments
  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric assessments/examinations/follow-up care of patients
  • Develop and implement patient management policies and procedures
  • Facilitate referrals to other psychiatric professionals and medical facilities
  • Communicate with collaborating psychiatrist or specialist regarding patient care
  • Involve staff in psychiatric interventions, gathering information from them and discussing the limitations and abilities of the participant
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed
  • Provide other psychiatric services required by the target population
  • Participate in Treatment Planning Meetings
  • Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives
  • Attend all education and training requirements
  • Provide coverage as needed

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience in psychiatric or other medical fields
  • Ability to build rapport with patients
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong leadership qualities
  • Ability to work in a community-based setting

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATES:

  • Have the appropriate license to practice as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner including DEA license and Mal Practice Insurance

Desired Education

  • Graduate from an accredited nursing school with an advanced degree for Psychiatric Nurse

Minimum Certification /

Licensure Required

  • Registered with the Board of Nursing

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must pass Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), and Community Care Licensing (CCL) background clearance.
  • Valid California Drivers license.
  • TB clearance.
  • Driving record acceptable for coverage by Gateways insurance carrier.
  • Fire and Safety Training*.
  • First Aid Training Certification*.
  • CPR Certification*.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute Training (CPI)**

* Note: If indicated certifications/licenses are lacking, they must be obtained within 180 days of hire.

**Training needs to be completed within 30 days from the date of hire on a designated date provided by on-boarding. Staff need to be certified at the commensurate level for their role to perform their job duties (staff will be taken off the schedule if certification is not achieved).
