Gateway High School is Hiring a High School Student Engagement Advocate (Newcomer Orientation) Near Aurora, CO

Advocate, Student Engagement (Newcomer Orientation)

Days/Hours: as designated by the school

Work Year: 205-261 days

Salary Range: APT 1 (Aurora Public Schools APT Salary Schedule)

  • Student Advocate
  • Build relationships with students and families as they transition to a US school for the first time.
  • Teach students basic conversation in English so they can communicate with teachers and peers at school.
  • Support students new to the US with basic skills to function effectively in academic classes at Gateway.
  • Differentiate instruction based on individual student needs in order to meet course outcomes (navigate their way around the school, use online learning platforms, build community with peers, be familiar with common instructional strategies such as turn and talk, use a binder to stay organized).
  • Progress monitor individual students as they transition to core academic classes, collecting and leveraging data to inform decision-making.
  • Incorporate Gateway’s core values and associated behaviors into orientation instruction.
  • Collaborate with counselors to build appropriate schedules for students.
  • Communicate and collaborate with peer counselors, teacher assistants, support staff, teachers, and parents/guardians.
  • Develop student snapshots based on individual strengths and growth areas to communicate with core teachers.
  • Collaboratively develop a strong transitional program for students new to the country to be successful in their high school careers.
  • Develop community partnerships to best support newcomer students and their families, design and host family engagement events and activities.

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Complete crisis prevention and intervention training (CPI) within 3 months of hire
  • Bilingual preferred

Skills, Knowledge, Equipment, and Other

Oral and written communication, excellent interpersonal, organizational, presentation, time management, facilitation, mediation, and decision making skills. Ability to work with students and families with diverse backgrounds and abilities. Ability to diffuse volatile situations. Operating knowledge of and experience with computers. Operating knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets and internet applications and general office equipment required within three months after hire. Bilingual oral and written skills preferred. Must be a self-starter who can work with a minimum of supervision. English language skills required. Oral and written fluency in second language may be preferred or required based on building assignment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $64,000.00 - $87,000.00 per year
