Future Cycle Breakers is Hiring a Board Treasurer Near Chicago, IL

FCB is currently seeking a Treasurer to join our Board. The Board will support the work of FCB and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by FCB’s Director, the Board-Director relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION:

Future Cycle Breakers (FCB) is a 501c3 organization empowering youth to break the cycle of generational poverty by becoming bold leaders and entrepreneurs. Our programs provide an environment for fostering a positive mindset, and self-development with a focus on building confidence, exploring individual purpose, creating a safe space for sharing personal stories, developing connections with mentors and peers, valuing oneself, taking risks, and discovering unique strengths.

EXECUTIVE BOARD TREASURER OPPORTUNITY:

  • Must have Finance or Accounting experience
  • Previous Board Treasurer experience prefered

BOARD MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fundraising

  • Consider FCB a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority.
  • Actively solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals,
  • Attend fundraising events as a representative of FCB promoting funding for programming.

Leadership, governance and oversight

  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the Director as s/he develops and implements FCB’s strategic plan
  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by FCB for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics; reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
  • Approving FCB’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the Director
  • Assisting the Director and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
  • Partnering with the Director and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are implemented
  • Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments, as assigned
  • Representing FCB to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization
  • Ensuring FCB’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities FCB serves

Individual Board Member Responsibilities

  • Attend all board and committee meetings and functions, such as special events.
  • Be informed about the organization's mission, services, policies, and programs.
  • Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings.
  • Serve on committees or task forces and offer to take on special assignments, as assigned.
  • Make a personal financial contribution to FCB.
  • Inform others about FCB.
  • Suggest possible nominees to the board who can make significant contributions to the work of the board and FCB.
  • Keep up-to-date on developments in FCB’s field.
  • Follow conflict-of-interest and confidentiality policies.
  • Refrain from making special requests of the staff without prior approval from the Board’s President.
  • Assist the board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities, such as reviewing FCB’s annual financial statements.

QUALIFICATIONS

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about FCB’s mission and who has a track record of board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Extensive professional experience with significant leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector
  • A commitment to and understanding of FCB’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience
  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of FCB’s beneficiaries

Personal characteristics to consider

  • Ability to: listen, analyze, think clearly and creatively, and work well with people individually and in a group.
  • Willing to: prepare for and attend board and committee meetings, ask questions, take responsibility and follow through on a given assignment, contribute personal and financial resources in a generous way according to circumstances, open doors in the community, and evaluate oneself.
  • Develop certain skills if needed, such as: cultivating and soliciting funds, cultivating and recruiting board members and other volunteers, reading and understanding financial statements, and learning more about the substantive program area of the organization.
  • Possess honesty, sensitivity to and tolerance of differing views, a friendly, responsive, and patient approach, community-building skills, personal integrity, a developed sense of values, concern for FCB’s development, a sense of humor.

BOARD MEMBERSHIP TERMS

  • Service on FCB’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.
  • FCB’s Board Members shall hold office for an initial term of three years, with annual renewal of service in subsequent years by mutual agreement of the Member and the full Board with input from the Director.
