Job Summary:
The Student Success Coordinator's (SSC) primary role is to facilitate the effective functioning of individual students struggling in the college environment by using resources both within and outside the University. The SSC will manage student concerns through a variety of non-clinical interventions, referrals and follow-up services in collaboration with other University departments or individuals, community agencies, parents or guardians, and stakeholders in the students' success.
The SSC is integral to the vision, mission and values of Furman University and The Furman Advantage (TFA) pillars: belongingness, health and wellbeing, student success, engaged learning, campus vibrancy/social life and the incorporation and expansion of tenets of Furman's diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) plan.
The position is full time, nine months from mid-August to mid-May and 7.5 hrs./wk. during the summer months. The SSC reports to the Associate Dean of Student Success and Wellbeing.
Job Description:
Responsibilities:
Provides support to students through a variety of non-clinical interventions, referrals and follow-up services in collaboration with other University departments or individuals, community agencies, parents or guardians, and stakeholders in the students' success.
Participates in collaborative meetings with campus partners to support University-wide retention efforts. These campus partners may include Academic Assistance, Alcohol & Drug Education, Athletics, Center for Inclusive Communities, Counseling Center, Accessibility Resources, Financial Aid, Health Services, Housing and Residence Life, Spiritual Life, Student Life and Student Conduct.
Assists students returning from hospitalization to engage with appropriate support services and to coordinate elements of the intervention plan.
Establishes working relationships with community resources (i.e., physicians, therapists, psychiatrists, life coaches, hospitals). Maintains a directory of community resources available to students.
Serves as a resource to students, families and university staff in crisis situations to support student success and wellbeing.
Encourages and facilitates referrals to the Counseling Center for students who need mental health support beyond the scope of practice.
Serves as a primary member on the University's Student Intervention Team (SIT) and maintains appropriate documentation.
Reaches out to students to follow up on leave of absences. Supports students through readmission process after a leave of absence due to psychological or medical related matters.
Maintains records as necessary to document and monitor the case management process, and ensures appropriate utilization of services and facilitates continuity of care.
Provides consultation to students and families regarding referral to university and community resources, interpreting University policy and facilitating family support.
Trained to serve as a support person for students in the Title IX sexual misconduct resolution process.
Participates in staff meetings and case conferences within the Student Life and Academic Affairs Divisions.
Serves on University committees as assigned.
Attends professional meetings, conferences and trainings, as necessary.
Completes performance review process with supervisor and employees to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and University goals.
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor in support of the goals and objectives of the Division of Student Life, and the University. Relationships:
Daily contact with members of own work unit and immediate supervisor to plan, coordinate, problem-solve, present information and suggestions related to mutual goals.
Daily contact with students, faculty, staff and parents to influence, motivate or persuade parties to obtain desired results. Issues may involve disagreements or controversial matters.
Frequent contacts with other professionals to plan, coordinate, problem-solve, present information and suggestions related to mutual goals.
Responsibility for Final Decisions:
Tasks involve interpretation of data and/or procedures to address problems or situations that are not clearly defined. Work involves non-routine/diverse work not defined by procedures.
Errors may cause delays in a particular phase of work or result in losses of time or expenditure and may have important effects in internal relationships.
Reports To: Associate Dean of Student Success and Wellbeing
Work is performed independently except where the interpretation of law, policy, rule, complex procedure or request for exception is required.
Education/Skill Requirements:
Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs or applied health care field such as social work, counseling, psychology or nursing required.
Licensed or license-eligible in field of practice preferred.
Experience providing case management, consultation, crisis intervention, emergency response and/or outreach in a university, community mental health, social services, or health care setting.
Working advanced knowledge of fundamental fairness requirements and familiarity with FERPA, HIPAA and ADA compliance preferred.
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required.
Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills required.
