GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Legal Aid Manager will oversee all legal department programs. This position is
responsible for meeting all funder requirements and will have a primary caseload of
asylum applications and related immigration matters under the CEO's strategic vision.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
● Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited university and member of the bar in good
standing OR;
● BIA/DOJ accredited or relevant experience and willing to become accredited
● Some experience or knowledge of U.S. asylum/immigration process.
● Bilingual Preferred
● Ability to effectively communicate in writing, verbally and electronically.
● Valid Enhanced Driver’s License or passport.
● High comfort level working with torture survivors, survivors of sexual violence/gender-based violence, highly traumatized people, and people suffering from PTSD
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
● Represent clients at affirmative asylum interviews and defensive court hearings
● Represent clients for adjustment of status, naturalization, and EAD applications, as well as family petitions and consular processing
● Provide for representation, when necessary, of all assigned clients.
● Prepare administrative applications to assist qualified asylum seekers with
traveling to Canada under exceptions to the Safe Third Country Agreement
● Develop new program initiatives such as sliding fee scales and expansion of services.
● Supervise staff and interns
● Develop, review and monitor person-centered care plans in coordination with the
social service and site teams.
● Develop, oversee and administer, when necessary, standardized intakes, assessments, and evaluations.
● Develop program reports and ensure all funder and agency reporting deadlines
are met.
● Oversee the maintenance of electronic and paper client files per agency, funder,
and auditor standards
● Monitor and ensure that funder and agency guidelines and outcomes are met.
● Monitor and maintain department budget(s) and make appropriate recommendations
● Assist with the development of department policies and procedures
● Oversee the development and implementation of department goals and targets
● Ensure the full department gets ongoing training on serving the agency’s clients
● Develop and update relevant materials.
● Assist in maintaining knowledge and referral base through networking with other
professionals.
● Assist in the marketing of agency programs and services.
● Prepare and conduct appropriate trainings for clients (e.g. Know Your Rights, etc)
● Prepare and conduct community presentations to expand community awareness
of the agency and its clients, programs and services.
● Seek and maintain community partnerships to expand agency program capacity.
● Represent the agency at public forums, conferences, and media events; function
as an advocate representing Freedom House Detroit in the community
