Description

The Patient Care Technician performs nursing procedures and patient care tasks. The staffing of the Center is based on a teamwork concept. Employees’ may be cross trained in other clinical areas and may be expected to perform duties other than their normal ones as staffing and patient needs change.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
  • Assures patient/personal safety by maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and Center related business.
  • Adhering to principles of Universal Precautions.
  • Assist nurses in Pre-Op and PACU with lifting, turning and assisting patients to get up.
  • Answer patients' call signals.
  • Provide patients with help walking, exercising, and moving in and out of bed.
  • Observe patients' conditions, measuring and recording food and liquid intake and output and vital signs, and report changes to professional staff. Feed patients who are unable to feed themselves.
  • Performs I&Os; checks vital signs and weight; performs sugar and acetone urine testing, specimen collection.
  • Clean rooms and change linens. Clean and remake stretchers. Take bagged linen and trash to proper storage areas.
  • Restock supplies in Pre-Op and PACU. Assure adequate linen supply for each area. Receive and check off ordered supplies.
  • Assist with transportation of received supplies to proper storage area
  • Maintains good working relations with nursing unit staff and other hospital employees through appropriate communication.
  • Instills confidence in patients by maintaining a neat appearance and performing duties in a competent and caring manner.
  • Reports observations of patients to the nurse caring for the patient to ensure professional assessment.
  • Maintains established Center and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Documents concisely, precisely and accurately on all records or documents as indicated by policy.
  • Participates in quality assessment activities as directed for the continuous improvement of patient care and for the Center. Compliance with continuing and mandatory education programs.
  • Ability to respond quickly, physically and mentally when priorities and/or the patient’s condition changes.
  • Regular, physical attendance on a predictable basis is essential to the performance of this job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Static Strength - The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects.
  • Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Uses problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members.
  • Function independently without constant supervision. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
  • Operation Monitoring - Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Qualifications and Experience

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent, preferred.
  • One-year experience and/or training in medical setting, preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
