The primary duty of the Controls Supervisor (CS) position is to supervise the Building Automation Controls team. The CS will plan and supervise testing of all equipment related to fire alarm systems. The CS will plan and manage all upgrades related to building automation systems and fire alarm systems. The CS will create, publish, and present trainings to the operating engineering team in the fields of building automation systems, motor control systems and fire alarm systems to ensure proper operation by the crew. The CS will manage specific functional programs outlined below.

Manage all work related to critical systems, including all cooling equipment for 5 server rooms, 2 data centers, MRIs, Linear Accelerators, 54 Environmental Rooms, and a large freezer facility that houses 200 freezers. Supervise the maintenance and repairs of over 1,000 scientific freezers and refrigerators spread across a 15-acre campus, including all cryogenic and ultralow units. Oversee the maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment, as well as all fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, incubators, and ice machines.

Responsibilities

  • Assume overall responsibilities for the Facilities Engineering department when acting as the off-shift supervisor. This includes ensuring the facility is run in a safe and efficient manner, immediately responding to calls and emergencies as they arise to provide a safe workplace and preserve lab research.
  • Supervise the Controls Team
    • Provide coaching and guidance to a team of Operating Engineers who are in the Building Automation Controls Team
  • Develop trainings specifically for the building automation systems, motor controls, and fire alarms systems. These trainings will be given to the operating engineering crew to enhance their knowledge on these systems.
    • Conduct Annual Performance Appraisals and address performance issues
    • Create a plan for continuous Controls Team development
    • Fill team vacancies with qualified individuals.
  • Supervise the Critical Systems Team
    • Provide coaching and guidance to a team of Operating Engineers who are certified in refrigeration and Biomedical equipment repairs
    • Create a plan for continuous Refrigeration Team development
    • Conduct Annual Performance Appraisals and address performance issues
    • Fill team vacancies with qualified individuals
  • Supervise Maintenance Work
    • Oversee all repairs, work orders, and PM’s related to refrigeration and critical systems/Controls and verify their accuracy and completion
    • Participate in weekly Work Order review meetings and provide job details or explanations as required
    • Determine which work should be contracted due to skills required or work backlog
  • Supervise related Contractors and Vendors
    • Maintain relationship with vendors used to support and repair all types of Fire systems, Controls, refrigeration, laboratory, and biomedical equipment
    • Schedule and coordinate special projects on behalf of the Engineering department and customers as required
  • Act as liaison between customers and the Engineering department
    • Coordinate projects with the Facilities Planning Department
    • Coordinate all moves related to freezers, biosafety cabinets, and incubators
    • Manage minor renovation projects
    • Resolve large customer challenges related to lab equipment and operations
    • Assess equipment and advise customers in advance of impending equipment replacement needs
  • Participate on Freezer Committee
    • Coordinate with Shared Resources to develop and implement best practices for the use, maintenance, and repairs of all freezers on the campus
    • Provide input and direction on standardized technology solutions and product selection for safe, reliable, and energy efficient freezer operations
  • Ongoing Operations
    • Identify Building Systems related to refrigeration and cooling that are candidates for annual capital replacement programs
    • Perform annual building audits and create short or long-term corrective strategies
  • Assist with the Centers Energy Conservation Program primarily by performing after hours audits of lighting and other energy consuming systems and consumption practices.
  • Performs an annual building audit of the facility and coordinates this maintenance Audit with the Operations supervisor and the Administrative supervisor to ensure items needing corrective action are either accounted for in our short-term operational plans or our long term 20-year plan.
  • Assist the Staff Engineer with FDA compliance including review of job plans, monthly compliance reports and change orders to ensure the regulations are being adhered to.
  • Duties as assigned including assisting in ongoing studies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required unless advanced skills and experience can be demonstrated as equivalent to education requirement
  • Four or more years of increasing responsibilities in facilities maintenance and operations for a large bio-medical research, hospital or heavy manufacturing facilities is desired
  • Design or field experience in HVAC, building automated systems and experience in electrical motor control systems, operation, and maintenance is required.
  • Strong ability to present training on technical subjects related to building maintenance and operation.
  • Strong management and leadership skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Strong computer skills in a windows environment including Microsoft Office.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $94,702 to $149,656, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees a comprehensive benefits package designed to enhance health, well-being, and financial security.
