The Business Intelligence Engineer III will partner with multidisciplinary teams of analysts, data scientists, IT data engineers and health care systems/operations experts to establish standards and improve data quality, thereby enabling data-driven decisions and improving patient care. The BI Engineer builds and manages data assets that enable analytics and reporting for Fred Hutch’s clinical enterprise and the Fred Hutch/UW Medicine joint health care programs. This role combines data engineering and analytics functions to develop requirements, model data, create and maintain curated datasets, build ETL pipelines, automate data processes, create documentation and resources, and provide user training. Responsibilities may include architecture support (modeling, governance), engineering (custom integrations, pipelines), and analytics (dashboards, forecasts). In addition to technical expertise, the BI Engineer will help develop a functional plan for data management, identify and implement best practices, and establish documentation standards.

Responsibilities

  • Build curated and automated datasets that meet requirements generated from IT and analytics teams.
  • Work with stakeholders to establish requirements for data projects and propose scalable solutions.
  • Own project tasks, documentation, and customer communication for assigned work.
  • Own the design, creation, documentation, and maintenance of dashboards and reports with minimal support.
  • Own the design, creation, documentation, and maintenance of ETL pipelines and SQL tables/views with minimal support.
  • Support a data-driven culture by recommending and implementing good data governance practices whenever possible.
  • Cultivate relationships with customers across Fred Hutch and Consortium partners and drive adoption of best practices and tools.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Coding bootcamps and continuing education certificates may also be acceptable.
  • Minimum 5 years of related work experience.
  • Ability to advocate on behalf of the customer and synthesize pain points into a list of requirements.
  • Ability to manage one's own time, projects, and day-to-day work.
  • Advanced knowledge of Tableau, PowerBI, AWS QuickSight, or other data visualization tools.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and SQL.
  • Advanced knowledge of data modeling and architecture best practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of SSIS, Airflow, or other ETL tools.
  • Advanced knowledge of PowerShell, Python, or other scripting language.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics.
  • Previous experience in a health care and/or medical research environment.
  • Previous experience implementing data governance best practices within an organization or team.
  • Previous experience working with cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or GCS.
  • Previous experience developing applications with tools such as PowerApps, AirTable, GoAnywhere, and other tools.
  • Previous experience using open source technology such as Linux OS.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $96,532 to $152,584 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
