Salary Range: $30.00 - $35.00 Hourly
Travel Percentage: Citywide

Description

Title:  Handyperson

Unit: Facilities Management 

Reports to: Senior Superintendent - Harlem 

Status: Full time; Regular; Non-Exempt 

Salary:  $30 to $35 an hour

Location: Agency-wide 

Days/hours: Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM (flexibility needed) and on-call 24 hours 

Position Summary: 

The handyperson assists the building superintendent with the day-to-day running of the facilities department and ensures that the building is kept in great shape and that all mechanicals are monitored and managed. The handyperson will be responsible to address work orders as they come in from tenants and staff and handle repairs in a timely and cost effective manner. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Follow up in a timely fashion on all work orders assigned by building superintendent 

  • Develop positive interactions and relationships with all tenants and staff 

  • Handle minor repairs to the common spaces, offices, and apartments including but not limited to flooring repairs, plastering and painting, repairs to doors, lock core changes, repairs to appliances, etc. 

  • Assist building superintendent and porters with daily trash removal and cleaning as required 

  • Work with building superintendent to keep all mechanicals in tip-top shape and assist outside contractors with same 

  • Help general contractors who are doing work within the property with all necessary access and oversee proper safety protocols 

  • Monitor the building for any repairs or cleaning and report conditions to building superintendent without delay 

  • Follow all agency policies and procedures in conducting the duties of this job 

  • Serve as Assistant Fire Safety Coordinator as required 

  • Serve as acting building superintendent in her/his absence 

  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications


Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or GED preferred. 

  • Must have knowledge on use of including but not limited to basic hand tools, waste cleaners, power washers, snow blowers. 

  • At least five years of experience working in facilities as a handyperson with extensive experience prepping and painting using latex and DTM paint and stains. 

  • Must have the ability to multi-task and work well under pressure. 

  • Must be available to work on-call as needed especially during inclement weather and during emergencies. 

  • Ability to work independently while at the same time taking direction and keeping superintendent informed. 

  • Must have or be capable of getting the following certificates of fitness: S13 (City-wide Standpipe System, S95 (Supervision of Fire Alarms), S12 (City-Wide Sprinkler), S14 (Standpipe for Multizone system) and N80 (Coordinator of Fire Safety and Alarm Systems). 

  • Must have a valid and clean NYS driver’s license. 

  • Must have basic computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office, payroll systems, and work order management.
