Bankruptcy Coordinator/Collection Asst. II-(Onsite)
Purpose:
To provide legal and clerical support for the Collection Department.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Handles all phases of bankruptcy accounts which includes filing, preparation of proof of claims for Chapter 13 bankrupt accounts, attend meetings of creditors, prepares JV’s per trustee’s instructions to post payments received from bankruptcy trustee and manually adjust accounts for any partial payments and due date changes that occur. Prepare reaffirmations for Chapter 7 bankrupt accounts. Follow up with trustee on Chapter 13 bankrupt accounts for payment, and to verify “order to dismiss” not pending. Updates memos regarding correspondence received on bankrupt accounts. Places calls to attorney’s at request of manager for additional information, follow up or to verify intention of member. Maintain monthly report for 60 day plus bankruptcy log. Overseer of the E-Oscar browser based system that transfers the credit bureau information between Consumer Reporting Agencies and Data Furnishers. Handles credit report issues to include reporting information to credit bureaus as well as responding to member disputes received by letter or through E-Oscar.
  • Acts as the liaison between credit union and attorneys for legal files that exceed $5000.00. Also, responsible for maintaining legal files, recording judgments and ensuring monthly invoice payments are disbursed to attorneys accordingly.
  • Handles all aspects of charge off accounts to include: Prepares Journal Vouchers and do adjustments on accounts, (stop late charges, stop life and A&H insurance, if applicable) key in transactions necessary to charge off accounts, maintains log on all payments received on charged off accounts, balances log and charged off accounts with Accounting Department monthly. Places receipts in member’s file.
  • Responsible for entering charge off utility waiver and returned check debts into the M2Reporter system for monthly transmission to credit bureaus, as well as monitoring for updates on accounts that are paid in full.
  • Responsible for placing all non-bankrupt accounts with collection agency after account has been charged off. This includes: preparing copies of all pertinent information (QM, QL, contract and last letter sent), type log of accounts assigned to collection agency, update member’s account that is assigned to collection agency. Ensures that check requests are completed correctly and requests check from Accounting Department, mails check to collection agency once received. Copies all pertinent information for record. Posts monies received (adjusts balance if applicable), maintains log of all monies received, verifies billing to ensure accuracy.
  • Responsible for all aspects of phone and web payments to include accepting and posting payments received and reversing payments as needed. Regulates member registration through SWBC Payment Center and balances funded transactions with the Accounting Department.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists Collection department in answering incoming telephone calls and routes them to appropriate employee.
  • Answers members’ inquiries and assists other financial institutions with skip tracing.
  • Place holds on accounts and transfer monies on delinquent loans.
  • Makes adjustments to loan payments when payments have been misapplied to accounts, researching account histories when necessary to adjust.
  • Sets up payroll allocations on accounts as needed by the Collection Department.
  • Types correspondence and memorandums, proofreads for proper spelling, capitalization, grammar, punctuation format, content and accuracy.
  • Requests checks, prepares summons and attends small claims court in surrounding counties as needed by department. File copies of above in member’s files.
  • Recommends to the manager the accounts to be charge off per collection policy.
  • Submits balanced quarterly loan charge off recovery and bankruptcy call reports to upper management.
  • Must comply with the Federal Bank Secrecy Act, Anti-Money Laundering & Customer Identification Policy (BSA), the OFAC Policy and the Identity Theft Policy.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Education and Training:
  • A two-year college degree or completion of specialized course of study at business or trade school.
  • On an annual basis is required to complete mandatory Bank Secrecy Act, OFAC and Red Flag Identity Theft training.
Prior Experience:
  • 1-3 years similar or related experience.
Interpersonal Skills:
Courtesy, tact and diplomacy are essential elements of the job. Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the organization for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation.
Other Special Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong communication skills both in writing and verbal and the ability to explain complex topics or situations.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of bankruptcy laws and regulations.
  • Strong working knowledge of all credit union policies and procedures regarding lending.
  • Strong proficiency in all Microsoft products and ability to learn new software quickly.
Physical Demands:
The position frequently involves bending, stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, lifting (up to 20 lbs), pushing and/or pulling
Working Conditions:
Minimal adverse working conditions. Some fluctuations in temperature experienced in office setting. May need to work beyond normal working hours, pending organization needs.
