The Manager of Emergency Services provides leadership for the daily operation of Emergency Services (Emergency Department, Urgent Care, Patient Transport Services) and Switchboard in accordance with federal, state, and organizational standards. In collaboration with the Director and Clinical Nurse Specialist of Emergency Services, the Manager provides guidance for the provision of exceptional care and service within a healthy and respectful work environment. This includes accountability for patient care, the patient experience, staff onboarding and continued development, scheduling, process improvement, and key initiatives. The Manager builds strong relationships with providers, colleagues throughout the organization, and the EMS community.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Leads and directs the clinical and day-to-day operations of Emergency Services and Switchboard.
  • Works in partnership with the Director and CNS to plan and implement quality performance projects, adhere to regulatory guidelines, foster professional development, plan for anticipated staffing needs, facilitate staff retention, and manage equipment and supplies in a cost-effective manner.
  • Participates in Emergency Services leadership meetings and projects to set and attain department goals based on the Fort HealthCare mission and values.
  • In collaboration with the Director and CNS, initiates activities that contribute to success in financial, operational, and mission-driven outcomes.
  • Collaborates with the team regarding safety, adherence to regulatory standards, equipment needs, staffing, quality improvement, and best practice standards for staff and providers.
  • Assists with the hiring, training, and mentoring of new employees. Completes employee performance appraisals. Assists with provider orientation.
  • Delivers feedback and demonstrates a professional approach at all times, working closely with staff members, administration, providers, and the nursing services team to create a successful, healthy, and positive work environment in the department and throughout the organization.
  • Develops efficient, evidence-based workflows and quality metrics for care of STEMI, stroke and trauma patients in collaboration with the Director and CNS of Emergency Services; provides staff education and coordinates drills.
  • Partners with the Emergency Response Liaison(s) and EMS Medical Director to ensure effective transitions in patient care and to develop strong working relationships with EMS.
  • Develops department specific emergency response plans, provides training, and conducts drills in coordination with the Safety Director, Director and CNS of Emergency Services, and EMS partners.
  • Actively supports the Nursing Services Shared Governance structure,
  • Performs staff, physician, and patient rounding to identify organizational needs, enhance clinical quality, improve the patient experience, and share positive feedback to recognize staff members and providers.
  • Provides direct patient care when needed based on volume and acuity of patients.
  • Completes department-specific orientation and annual competencies for this position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements for this position include:

  • BSN required; MSN preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of RN experience; two years of emergency nursing experience; One year of leadership experience in healthcare preferred.
  • Excellent teaching, interpersonal and communication skills; confident in speaking to groups; clearly communicates instructions, ideas and techniques. Able to communicate exceptionally well with administrative and management team, physicians, nursing staff, patients, and family members. Able to react in a calm, non-defensive, professional manner in any circumstance. Offers positive and effective support, along with clear directions to team members; able to recognize and respond to non-verbal cues and communication.
  • RN license to practice nursing in Wisconsin upon hire; maintains all required licenses, certifications or registrations required for this position required; Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) preferred.
