FogPharma is Hiring a Senior Director, Biochemistry and Biophysics Near Cambridge, MA

Why join us?

FogPharma is a biopharmaceutical company pioneering the discovery and development of Helicon™ therapeutics, which are peptides capable of efficient cell entry and modulation of both protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions. Through Helicon therapeutics, FogPharma is poised to revolutionize the medical possibilities for patients by precisely drugging intracellular targets long understood to be significant drivers of disease but never before drugged due to the limitations of existing drug modalities to act within the cell.

FOG-001, the company’s first-in-class TCF-blocking β-catenin inhibitor, is being evaluated in a Phase 1/2 study for patients with advanced solid tumors, including colorectal cancer. FogPharma is fully leveraging the unprecedented potential Helicons present by deploying proprietary, custom-built machine learning and computational methods as part of its discovery and development process. FogPharma has raised more than $500 million to date from leading life sciences investors. FogPharma is headquartered in Cambridge, Mass.

What’s the opportunity?

We’re looking for an experienced and driven scientist to lead the biochemistry and biophysics of our Helicon discovery projects. The strategies we use for tackling challenging diseases include the identification of novel binding sites on undruggable proteins, the disruption of protein-protein or protein-DNA interactions, targeted protein degradation, and targeted radioligand delivery – all of which critically depend on rigorous and creative biochemistry and biophysics work.

In this position, you will play a key role in building a pipeline of Helicon peptides that bind undruggable targets within the cell and that deliver α-emitting radionuclides to tumors-expressed surface markers. You will lead a team of scientists who are involved in each step of our discovery projects from target evaluation through to pre-clinical studies, and will also oversee our externalized biochemistry and biophysics activities. As a leader in the research organization, you will participate in strategic discussions and will be responsible for maintaining a culture of scientific excellence in all that we do. Success in the role will require innovation, scientific thought leadership, excellent communication, and outstanding collaboration and people management skills. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Manage a team of biochemists and biophysicists who perform target research, protein production, assay development, hit validation, mechanism-of-action studies, and structural biology to support and drive our discovery projects
  • Collaborate closely with members of our screening, biology, chemistry, and data science teams through each step of the drug discovery process
  • Manage outsourced biochemistry and biophysics activities at our CRO partners
  • Provide your team members with mentorship and scientific and professional growth, and build the team further as our company expands
  • Play a role in evaluating the biochemistry and cellular function of new candidate targets, and in developing strategies to discover inhibitors for them
  • Evaluate and adopt new methods, technologies, and external capabilities to enable us to discover and develop medicines faster and with higher probabilities of success
  • Clearly communicate strategy, execution plans, results, and conclusions to all levels of the organization

What you’ll need to be successful:

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, or related field with 15 years drug discovery experience
  • Demonstrated success in building and leading a highly productive and scientifically rigorous team, with a leadership and management philosophy that is grounded in teaching and empowerment
  • Broad expertise in biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology including protein expression and purification, fluorescence polarization, surface plasmon resonance, protein binding and enzyme kinetics, AlphaScreen, TR-FRET, X-ray crystallography, and interpretation and analysis of protein structural models
  • Experience with extracellular targeting, biologics, and/or targeted delivery is a strong plus
  • Experience in the field of targeted protein degradation is a plus
  • An enthusiastic and innovative mindset, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, and highly collaborative environment
  • Excellent communication, organization, and cross-functional team skills
  • Able to work on-site and attend in-person meetings: our research organization is centered on a predominantly on-site work culture
