PRN position: 7a-7p and 7p-7a

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing nursing care to patients, as well as providing direction and supervision to non-professional personnel in the provision of direct patient care.

QUALIFICATIONS

A minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience is preferred, but not required; preferably one (1) year of Substance Abuse nursing in addition to basic nursing experience; a current Tennessee Practical Nursing License; current CPR card.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

1. Completesnursing assessments under the supervision of an RN in a timely manner andindicates potential problems. Ability toact independently.

2. Collaborateswith RN to open interdisciplinary treatment plan and appropriately developstreatment plan for all conditions.

3. Communicateswith patient/family regarding care plan and outcome goals; involvedpatient/family in developing plan of care and accomplishing outcome goalsand/or consistently attends and participates in interdisciplinary teamconferences.

4. Facilitatespatient support/educational groups.

5. Providepatient care with minimal supervision. Adapts to assignments based on unit need. Independently recognizes and assumesadditional responsibility.

6. Administersmedication using safety initiative of using two means of identification. Documents and reports affects of scheduledand PRN medication. Observes and reportsaffects of medications in a safe and accurate manner. Facility narcotics and patients own narcoticsare handled appropriately.

7. Demonstratesknowledge of specialty practice through clinical performance.

8. Communicatespertinent information to peers and physicians and acts as a patientadvocate. Anticipates patient needs andmakes appropriate suggestions regarding treatment.

9. Performs in acompetent, calm and professional manner during crises or emergencysituations. Performs proficiently andexpertly. Aware of emergencymedications, equipment and their location and is proficient in knowledge anduse.

10. Demonstratesability to perform procedures and skills in a safe and accurate manner. Able to perform complex procedures and skillsindependently or with minimum supervision.

11. Communicatesand documents teaching and discharge planning.

12. Accuratelytakes physician (verbal or telephonically) orders and documentsappropriately. Transcribes and reviewsphysician orders.

13. Accurately andlegibly documents nursing intervention and expected outcomes, noting patientresponse, effectiveness of intervention and complications.

14. Demonstratesability to provide safe care.

15. Thoroughknowledge of pharmacy system (i.e. ordering, obtaining, and verification.)

16. Defines andclassified common chemicals of dependency and is knowledgeable about differentmedications, protocols for detoxification.

17. Recognizespotential dual diagnosis patients.

18. Recognizessigns and symptoms of intoxication and different substances.

19. Adheres toHIPAA and other confidentiality guidelines.

20. Utilizesstandard precautions and follows infection control procedures.

21. Adheres to andfollows Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.

22. Aware ofpatient handbook contents. Adheres toprogram rules.

23. Able to givethorough report to oncoming staff, supervisees and physicians.

24. Able to answerinquiries regarding admission and facilitate process (pre-certs).

25. Maintain unitsafety in regards to contraband.

26. Aware ofspecific duties and those of Program Technicians.

27. Completesadditional clinical tasks as assigned.

28. Approachesinterpersonal relationships in a manner that promotes cohesiveness, reducesconflict and provides for resolution with patients, families, visitors andconsumers.

29. Approachesinterpersonal relationships in a manner that promotes cohesiveness, reducesconflict and provides for resolution intradepartmentally and interdepartmentally.

ADMINISTRATIVELEADERSHIP

1. Manages unitwhen in charge. Handles unusual,stressful, complex situations with minimal supervision.

2. Maintainsawareness of general condition of patients on unit.

3. Serves as aresource person.

4. Serves as arole model providing direction and leadership in patient care.

5. Maintainspatient care equipment. Informs NurseExecutive when equipment is in need of repair.

6. Is cost consciousin use of supplies, medications and equipment. Identifies realistic strategies for cost containment. Implements strategies for cost containment.

7. Demonstratesknowledge of facility standards, policies and procedures.

8. Participatesin Performance Improvement Activities (e.g. data collection). Ability to function in an environmentregulated by Joint Commission, State, Federal or other regulatory entities.

9. Complies withemergency and disaster plans and procedures.

10. Completesadditional administrative tasks as assigned.

11. Activeparticipation in nursing meetings and facility in-services and other training.
