The Flushing YMCA is seeking a Music Instructor to develop and lead engaging youth class for middle school youth. The Music Instructor will serve as a resource for participants to achieve goals and a sense of well-being.

Key Responsibilities:

• Must be able to teach children in an engaging, safe, and responsive manner.
• To teach children about different topics and incorporate traditional techniques as well as other activities.
• Plan and teach engaging, lively and educational classes.
• Set up room and later return equipment used for the class.
• Plan with the Director to order and maintain all equipment or supplies needed for class.
• Develop, with the Director, a curriculum of age-appropriate activities and themes for class.
• Responsible for leading all children through a creative and imaginative process, building skills and confidence.
• Meet and relate with participants and parents in a friendly helpful way.
• Inform immediate supervisor, on a daily basis, of any concerns or problems regarding participants and facilities.
• Provide students with the tools and skills to be successful musicians.
• Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings and prepare students for special events and showcases.
• Conforms to the YMCA’s standards, guidelines and mission.
• Provide supervisor with lesson plans on a monthly schedule.
• Takes attendance weekly and turns in attendance sheets.
• Teach class to full capacity (at least 8 participants) and support enrollment and class participation through outreach/recruitment.
• Open to additional projects and tasks as needed.

Desired Skills & Experience:

• High School diploma or equivalent, some college preferred ideally in music, music education, youth development or related field working with youth, or equivalent work experience.
• Experience working with youth and/or early childhood, including knowledge of age-appropriate activities with youth development framework.
• Minimum of two years working with children/youth.
• Knowledge of youth practices.
• Ability to program weekly classes.
• Ability to work with parents and children, specifically.
• Creativity, accountability, and flexibility is a must.
• Able to work closely with Co-workers and Director to provide the best support for their weekly themes and events.
• Ability to play more than one instrument is preferred.
• At least one year of successful music instruction experience with children and adults.
• Performance experience preferred.
• Should have Classical and/or Jazz training.
• Should be extremely knowledgeable in music theory.
