Description

POSITION SUMMARY:
Fisk University seeks an AESP Counselor. The counselor works with the Living Learning Center Coordinators, Academic Support Services, Academic Success Center and LEAD Program to implement retention strategies and activities into daily operations that complement a University-wide student retention and academic excellence initiative.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develops effective practices for student retention to ensure that support services are responsive to students’ needs
  • Identifies, recommends and implements learning workshops, supplemental instructional initiatives and other activities dependent on students’ needs
  • Works with other University departments (Academic Departments, Financial Aid, Business Office, Registrar) to implement services aimed at increasing retention especially for first year students
  • Prepares correspondence, reports and other documentation as it relates to retention
  • Must keep accurate student records
  • Inputs confidential student records into a computerized tracking system
  • Utilizes the EAB system as an early alert system for all students
  • Works with the student mentoring and tutoring for students
  • Proctors testing and assessment during Orientation or other scheduled times
  • Facilitates and promotes registration activities
  • Ensures coordination of workshops and /or seminars in the areas of writing, study and test taking skills

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

  • Assists with the development of recruitment and promotional materials
  • Works with IT personnel to develop student tracking system and other computerized tools, as well as, training modes for personnel involved in retention activities
  • Works occasional evening and weekend hours
  • Refers students to appropriate campus and off-campus resources
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, goal oriented
  • Ability to serve diverse constituents and other publics
  • Self-starter, independent, energetic, and enthusiastic professional
  • Understanding of and familiarity with higher education and its organizational culture
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of historically black colleges
  • Flexibility in scheduling and fulfillment of diverse job responsibilities
  • Public speaking ability and possession of adequate writing skills
  • Relevant leadership experience in college/university setting

 

Qualifications


Education: Possession of a master’s degree in a relevant discipline from an accredited institution is required.

Experience: 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in a college/university setting (preferred) will consider K-12 experience

Licenses or Certificates: None required.

Additional Requirements: 

A background and/or credit check will be required of the successful applicant. In addition to submitting a cover letter, candidates must submit current CV.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Environmental Conditions:

Working conditions - Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements.

Physical Effort - Position is physically comfortable; individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc.

Physical Risk - Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risk.
