DESCRIPTION:

The Scientist is responsible for bringing new extracts and concentrates from concept to commercialization, as well as supporting cost savings and product improvement projects. This role is hands-on, working collaboratively with cross-functional internal teams as well as interacting directly with customers to deliver innovative, scalable solutions, with speed to market execution that is handled in accordance with Finlay’s mission, business philosophy, ethics, and goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Participate in the development of various beverage prototypes from concept to commercialization, effectively documenting all ingredients, formulations, and processing directions.
  • Be hands on, must be willing to work on the bench and support production trials
  • Organize and manage multiple projects to ensure a timely, quality technical solution.
  • Conduct shelf-life stability trials to document changes in sensory and analytical properties that limit product shelf-life.
  • Interact directly with Commercial Team and customers as a subject matter expert in Finlay products and capabilities
  • Effectively communicate technical information to a non-technical audience (internal and external stakeholders)

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Stay current on trends in the food and beverage industry
  • Attend continuing education workshops/conferences, as needed
  • Work with outside labs, suppliers, co-packers, and consultants as needed for project execution
  • Travel as necessary to various Finlay facilities, customer locations, suppliers, co-manufacturers and trade shows
  • Participate in Sensory tastings of coffee and tea products

QUALITY / SAFETY:

  • Maintain safe quality food products by following good manufacturing practices, allergen controls, food defence, HACCP, SQF, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure visitors, contractors and customers are documented on each visit in and out of the facility to maintain good manufacturing practices, allergen controls, food defence/food security and HACCP controls.
  • Immediately report all food safety and quality issues to management.
  • Partner with others, sharing knowledge, skills, and information within assigned team and across functional areas.
  • Exhibit an understanding of quality standards and the ability to speak to Finlays quality systems.
  • Ensure all safety work practices are adhered to, reporting all unsafe conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of HACCP, GMP, regulatory, and labelling laws
  • Understand analytical parameters necessary for specification development and shelf-life analysis.
  • Ability to taste differences in products; good sense of smell and taste; good judge of colour variations and willing/able to consume coffee, tea, caffeine, and dairy products
  • Work effectively independently as well as part of cross functional and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Effectively communicate technical information to a non-technical audience (internal and external stakeholders)

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Food Science or related science/field of study, with 2 years of experience in the food industry
  • Intermediate computer skills utilizing Excel, MS Project, Word, PDF, Genesis

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Office, lab, and plant environments
  • Excessive standing
  • Need for hearing protection in designated areas
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs in a safe manner
  • Must be able to work in an environment with food allergens
  • Must be willing to work extended hours when needed
