Financial Health Network is Hiring a Remote Director, Policy and Research

Director of Policy and Research

SCOPE OF ROLE

The Director, Policy and Research will be responsible for the delivery of a portfolio of research projects and initiatives contributing to FHN’s policy and research objectives and overall thought leadership. The role requires excellent project management and team leadership skills, experience with the broad set of methodological tools used by FHN, and the strategic capacity and executional excellence to conceive of, manage, and disseminate meaningful research content that moves policymakers and organizations to take action on financial health. 

 

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree required. 

 

LOCATION

Chicago or Washington D.C.; Fully Remote (U.S. Based)

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10 years of professional experience and demonstrated success managing complex research projects and leading research teams. Additional years of education (graduate degree) may be substituted for up to four years of experience.
  • An established body of social science research (qualitative or quantitative) on household financial health or related topics. We are seeking an innovative and curious researcher interested in working collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with basic statistical analysis using one or more software languages - Stata or R preferred, but other languages (SAS, Python, etc.) are acceptable.
  • A proven track record of successful business development (obtaining funding) in the grant or contract space. Experience with writing grant or contract proposals to obtain research funding.
  • Experience working with funders, clients, and internal and external stakeholders to collaboratively design and execute rigorous research projects.
  • Good presentation skills; ability to connect with both technical and non-technical individuals, including the ability to communicate clearly, set priorities, problem-solve, influence, and motivate multiple audiences when presenting complex analyses. 
  • Ability to commit to up to 10% domestic travel, with very occasional evening meetings (1 to 2 a quarter).

RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Management

  • Lead and manage a portfolio of high-priority research projects on financial health topics.
  • Develop project budgets, manage staff capacity, and track project goals to ensure projects meet financial and impact targets.
 

Team Leadership

  • Lead research projects, ensuring efficient capacity allocation and management across all data projects and promoting necessary skills development and specialization across the team.
  • Quickly build trust and credibility with internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Serve as a member of the Policy and Research Leadership Team to help align priorities, ensure team cohesion, and promote staff development. 
  • Ensure the incorporation of anti-racist best practices throughout all projects.
  • Complete financial and impact reporting accurately and on time.
  • Support and lead Business Development activities for projects across the organization to ensure successful revenue generation in line with mission, including prospecting, project scoping, and proposal development. 
 

Data Collection and Analysis

  • Conduct basic statistical analysis of quantitative data. Familiarity with market research techniques including maxdiff or conjoint a plus.
  • Conduct qualitative research including focus group facilitation and in-depth interviews.
  • Serve as an internal consultant on projects across the organization that include research.
 

Research Design and Dissemination

  • Provide thought leadership and subject matter expertise on financial health topics.
  • Work with internal and external clients to design rigorous research solutions that best address identified research questions.
  • Communicate the results of complex statistical analyses in presentations and writing for a variety of audiences.
  • Work with the Marketing and Communications team to communicate results and impact of FHN’s research initiatives to an external audience.
