Description of primary duties and responsibilities:Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:In support of the mission of Fayetteville State University, the Department of Criminal Justice, which lies within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, offers a BS in Criminal Justice, a minor in Criminal Justice, an MS in Criminal Justice, (with both a thesis and non-thesis option), and a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice. The BSCJ includes an online degree completion component, while the MSCJ program is offered online. The Department has approximately 350 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students. The Department is a community of active teacher-scholars, notable for its commitment to academic excellence, diversity in scholarship, and student development. Its mission is to provide high-quality, student-centered academic programs and courses in criminal justice at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Department strives to develop abilities and values to serve our regional, national, international, and military communities and create a nurturing and learning environment for students, faculty, and staff.
Description of Work Continued:Primary Purpose of the Position:The fixed-term lecturer position is non-tenure-track, 9-month appointment. The fixed-term lecturer is expected to teach courses in criminal justice, develop and teach new courses, advise/mentor students, and serve on department, college, and university committees. The fixed term lecturer is expected to teach courses in whatever modality is needed (on-campus, online, virtual). The fixed term lecturer is expected to complete a faculty teaching orientation offered by the Office of Faculty Development in compliance with the NC- SARA (National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements) requirements.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • A master’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, or a closely related field with at least 18 graduate credit hours in criminal justice.
  • A strong commitment to excellence in teaching is expected. A positive and approachable demeanor and the capability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously is necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities are essential when interacting with professionals in the FSU service area, and a deep commitment to preserving and advancing FSU’s HBCU legacy, mission, and culture.
Knowledge skills and abilities:Knowledge:Disciplinary Expertise: In-depth knowledge of current theories, models, and best practices in the field of criminal justice/criminology
Educational Technology: Proficiency in using educational technology, digital tools, and online learning platforms to enhance teaching and support student engagement and learning outcomes
Skills:Teaching and Instruction: Ability to deliver effective and engaging instruction to criminal justice majors, employing a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs and to cultivate a collaborative and nurturing learning atmosphere
Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex concepts clearly and interact with students, colleagues, and community stakeholders effectively
Critical Thinking: Capacity to analyze challenges, identify innovative solutions, and make informed decisions on crime and justice-related issues
Abilities:Collaboration: Willingness and ability to collaborate with colleagues, community partners, and stakeholders to enhance crime and/or justice-associated initiatives, promote community engagement, and advance the goals of FSU’s Department of Criminal Justice and College of Humanities and Social Sciences
Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust instructional approaches and strategies based on individual student needs and changing educational trends and technologies
Commitment to Continuous Learning: A dedication to staying informed about current research, emerging trends, and developments in the discipline of criminal justice/criminology
Preferred Qualifications:Experience with online course development and instruction in Canvas or other online learning management systems.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to mentor students.
