Farmington Country Club is Hiring an Assistant Grounds Superintendent (Full-Time) Near Charlottesville, VA

This is an exciting opportunity for a driven and team-oriented individual to join our Golf Course and Grounds Maintenance team as the Assistant Grounds Superintendent. The Assistant Grounds Superintendent will be responsible in managing the daily maintenance of the Club grounds and specific areas on the Golf Course. This is a hands-on, entry-level management position with some weekend and holiday work shifts required.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Train and supervise Grounds Maintenance team, with strong emphasis on safety, efficient methods, work pace, and quality standards;
  • Train operators on safety, use, and care of hand/power equipment;
  • Collaborate with Grounds Superintendent to develop daily work schedules;
  • Assist in organizing assignments on job board for staff for the following morning and update assignments throughout each day, as needed, to enable efficient work flow;
  • Participate in annual Performance Review process for Grounds Maintenance team;
  • Assist in maintaining high quality turf in the Grounds Maintenance department’s areas of responsibility (Practices will include aerating, seeding, fertilizing, applying pesticides as needed, installing sod and others as appropriate);
  • Mow, edge, and trim turf areas using mowers, weed eaters, edgers, blowers, tractors, carts, and other tools as needed to manicure the grounds;
  • Plant, water, weed, edge, mulch, prune, and groom ornamental plant materials;
  • Observe plant health, be aware of problems and notify Grounds Superintendent of any issues;
  • Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals to support turf and ornamental PHC programs and Club nutrient management plan;
  • Install, operate and maintain irrigation system in proper working order;
  • Maintain department equipment in proper working order in cooperation with the Club mechanics;
  • Respond to inclement weather events and assist Grounds Superintendent in coordinating department activities;
  • Cooperate with other departments to support Club events and needs.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • College: 2-year degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, or a related field preferred or equivalent technical training;
  • Virginia Commercial Not for Hire Pesticide License categories: 3 A, 3 B or the ability to acquire;
  • Working knowledge of, and the ability to incorporate the use of Microsoft office software, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, to support Grounds Maintenance and other activities, and the ability to learn to use other software programs as needed;
  • An applicant must be able to understand and follow all safety rules, instructions for equipment maintenance and operation, job assignments and work lists, and MSDS fact sheets;
  • Employees are frequently asked to stand, walk long distances, carry items, stoop, kneel, and crouch. They must occasionally lift objects weighing 50 pounds;
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job are close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception;
  • While performing this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Farmington Country Club is a premier, full-service private club in Central Virginia. Farmington is a member-owned club founded in 1927, and recognized as a Platinum Club of America. Portions of the clubhouse date to 1780, and were designed by Thomas Jefferson. The grounds of Farmington Country Club cover 275 landscaped acres and include the clubhouse, guest rooms, athletic facilities, tennis courts and golf course.

The club has two restaurants, a formal dining room and a grill restaurant, seating a total of 300; each has its own kitchen. In addition, there are private dining rooms seating 100, 50, 40 and 12, a ballroom seating 250 and two seasonal snack bars. Sports facilities include a 27-hole golf course, 15 outdoor and three indoor tennis courts, three paddle tennis courts, a swimming complex with diving and lap pools and a zero-depth recreation area, and a professionally staffed fitness center. Club facilities include 40 guest rooms.
