POSITION: Ophthalmic Technician
DEPARTMENT: Clinical
REPORT TO: Clinical Manager
Large Ophthalmology and Optometry Practice in Oak Lawn has an opening for an experienced Ophthalmic Technician to join our patient care team. Ophthalmic Technicians are primarily responsible for taking medical histories from patients, dilating their eyes to prepare them for exams, assisting the optometrist by performing applanation tonometry, refraction, and retinoscopy tests and other tests.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent, some college preferred
2 years of experience as an ophthalmic assistant
Completion of an ophthalmic assistant or technician program strongly preferred (COA or COT)
Experience with eye measurement tools and testing techniques
Previous experience with EMR tools
Bilingual - Spanish, Polish, Arabic preferred but not required
Computer proficient
Valid CPR Certification
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrated, advanced comprehension of the ophthalmic assistant skills as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
Basic understanding of optics and the ability to perform refractometry
Demonstrated comprehension of the principles of optics, refraction, and contact lenses
Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive work ups on three patients per hour
Ability to deal professionally, courteously, and efficiently with staff and patients and to remain calm under stress
Knowledge of all confidentiality requirements regarding patients and strict maintenance of proper confidentiality on all such information
Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance
Take medical histories and verify information
Perform visual function and diagnostic tests, such as applanation tonometry, refraction, and retinoscopy
Utilize tools such as a Humphrey field analyzer and OCT to take eye measurements
Inform ophthalmologist about changes to a patient's visual acuity and other vision issues
Dilate eyes to prepare patients for their eye exam
Explain how to properly use eye drops or other medications
Explain how to properly use contact lenses
Assist with inventory management
