Position Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Field Training Officer (FTO) is to provide field training and orientation to new employees (trainees) of Falck Northwest and evaluate trainees during their probationary/orientation period to ensure all new trainees demonstrate an understanding of all applicable policies and procedures set forth by Falck Northwest and demonstrate proficiency in all skills required by Falck Northwest.The FTO is responsible for performing all duties outlined in the EMT and Paramedic position description, depending on the individual’s level of certification.

Essential Functions:

The FTO may be assigned one or more duties. These duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times, never discussing a trainees or his/her progress with anyone other than the trainee, other clinical personnel and the management team at Falck.
  • Evaluate,monitor and document performance of the trainees while on duty.
  • Assist trainees in the arrangement of additional training within the guidelines of the Field Training Program.
  • Provide regular feedback and written evaluations on a trainee’s progress and performance to the trainee, Clinical Department and Human Resources.
  • Advise the Clinical Department, or local management, in a timely manner of any problems that occur and which the FTO feels he/she cannot resolve.
  • Review Patient Care Reports (PCRs) of patients whose care you and your trainees were directly involved with to assure proper patient care and documentation standards are upheld.
  • Exhibit willingness to work as a team member and is flexible and readily adaptable to change.
  • Seek input and ideas regarding ways to improve the overall work environment and performance of the work force.
  • Deal effectively with conflict in a professional manner to affect mutually beneficial resolutions.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with peers, supervisors and the management team.
  • Attend regularly scheduled training meetings.
  • Participate in organizational development groups formed at the FTO level
  • Must remain at a full-time status to be an FTO.
  • Attend all required Falck CME for maintenance of Paramedic license as assigned by the Clinical Department.
  • Provide CME training on a regular basis as assigned by the Clinical Department.
  • Participate in monthly QA/QI process reviewing assigned charts, providing feedback, and delivering guidance, improvement plans to patient care staff.
  • Assist with developing and delivering sections of NEOP either individually or as part of a group.
  • Assist with developing and delivering sections of bi-annual skills refreshers.
  • Comply with all Falck policies and procedures outlined in the Falck USA Employee Handbook, local Policy & Procedure Manual, and any other regulatory document that may be required by regulatory agencies.
  • Address employee issues via Falck Chain of Command.
  • Understand that unprofessional conduct and substandard job performance will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Additional Duties:

The FTO may be assigned one or more additional duties. These duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist with the completion of appropriate forms and reports that are not considered essential functions.
  • Inventory and request needed supplies to perform department tasks.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Management.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The individual in this position must possess the following qualifications:

  • Current Oregon State Paramedic or EMT license.
  • Current state driver’s license.
  • Must have at least 1 year experience at current level of licensure.
  • Must possess knowledge of city EMS structure and role of private ambulance.
  • Must possess in depth knowledge of local Protocols and pre-hospital care and have a proven track record of ongoing responsibility.

Within 6 months of employment, the FTO must have completed:

  • Completed NAEMSE Level 1 Instructors course
  • Completed Escaping Violent Encounters (E.V.E.) Instructor Program

Education Requirements:

The individual in this position must possess the following education requirements:

EMT and Paramedic FTO’S:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Current American Heart Association CPR for the Healthcare Provider card.

Paramedic FTO’s Only:

  • Current American Heart Association ACLS card.
  • Current American Heart Association PALS card.
  • Current PHTLS card.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Frequently:Ability to lift, carry, and balance 110 pounds; ability to exert on a regular basis 50 pounds of force and at times up to 100 pounds.

Constantly:Ability to bend and stoop, ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time, possess hand-eye-foot coordination and color recognition, good manual dexterity, with the ability to perform all tasks related to Emergency Medical Services Duty.

Clinical Requirements:

  • Must not have any protocol violations for one year prior to the time of being awarded the position.
  • Be in good standing within the operation and have no corrective action for six (6) months prior to the time of being awarded the position.
  • Must demonstrate clinical competency which will be measured through a review of patient care documentation for a period of 3 months prior to the date the individual would be awarded the position.
  • Must remain current with all certifications and ongoing education requirement for his/her Paramedic license.
  • Must remain compliant with company required training including, but not limited to, harassment training, compliance training, and documentation training.
  • Complete assigned projects on time and within the project management guidelines as instructed by Management.

Equipment Operated:

The individual in this position must be familiar with using the following equipment to perform the essential functions of this job.

Occasionally: Fax machine, copy machine, hole-punch, calculator, laminator.

Frequently: Computer, printer, telephone, vehicle lubricant dispensing devices, wheel chair lift, wheel chair.

Environmental Conditions:

Except where appropriate and conducive to accomplishing the goals and objectives of a particular task (such as in an emergency situation) the FTO will work in an area that is well lighted and ventilated and is as physically and psychologically innocuous as possible under the conditions which exist at a particular time.Because the essential function of the job of FTO may require exposure to hazardous materials as well as infectious waste, diseases, odors and other situations associated with health care, including but not limited to exposure to AIDS, HIV and Hepatitis B viruses involving Risk Classification Category 3, environmental conditions will fluctuate. To be qualified for the position of FTO, an applicant/employee will have the ability to work in an environment conducive to caring for patients, with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to self or others.

The FTO regularly works in outside weather and is regularly exposed to wet or dry conditions, extreme cold and extreme heat. The FTO frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles (potential exposure to communicable diseases, blood-borne and airborne pathogens), toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration. 

The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud.
