SUMMARY
Ensures compliance with Head Start performance standards by assuring that the program provides high quality health, oral health, mental health, and nutrition services that are developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate and that will support each child’s growth and school readiness.
JOB DUTIES
- Establishes networking with local health/dental related agencies through MOA’s as appropriate and in partnership with the FNA Health Consultant, parents and staff
- Promotes preventive health services and early intervention by assisting families in arranging for health/dental screening examinations and treatment for all enrolled children as required by Head Start performance standards
- Assists in linking the family to an ongoing source of continuous, accessible health care and health insurance coverage
- Ensures up to date health status on all enrolled children: well child, EPSTD, dental; assists parents with making arrangements to bring a child up to date
- Collaborates with families/medical providers and develops a Plan of Care to meet the medical and/or nutritional/dietary needs of the child
- Develops and maintains a system to track referrals and services provided and monitor the implementation to meet a follow-up plan to meet any needs associated with the referral
- Assists in developing, organizing, facilitating, and evaluating the Health Services Advisory Committee (HSAC), which meets regularly
- Designs and coordinates health/dental trainings for parents and staff
- Collects, records, tracks, and reports child immunizations and health reports
- Observes children to determine health status, and initiate exclusion procedures when necessary
- Investigates health concerns referred by staff, records findings, and recommends actions
- Facilitates further diagnostic testing, evaluation, treatment, and follow up plan, as appropriate, through providing timely referrals when needed
- Assists home visitors, teachers and family advocates by accompanying them on health/dental related home visits as requested
- Ensures timely compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations, including Head Start (HS) Performance Standards, Childcare Licensing requirements, CARF accreditation guidelines, the Head Start Work Plan, and adherence to company policies and procedures
- Offers health perspective during child staffing
- Ensures that 45/90 day requirements are met according to Head Start Performance Standards
- Supports ongoing program recruitment needs
- Maintains confidentiality of all family records and information
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY
- Knowledge and understanding of child and family health
- Knowledge of Head Start 0-5 program and services
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to diverse cultures and lifestyles
- Skill in operating personal computer utilizing a variety of computer software
- Skill in managing multiple priorities and tasks concurrently to meet deadlines
- Skill in oral and written communication
- Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative and respectful working relationships with children, parents, supervisors, and other support staff
- Ability to effectively present instruction, and/or information to students, staff, parents, and public
- Ability to work effectively with Alaska Native populations
- Ability to work independently as well as with teams
- Ability to report to work in a timely manner
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)
- Associate’s degree in Health Sciences or related field
- Complete Infant/Child CPR and adult First Aid Training within thirty (30) days of hire
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)
- Bachelor’s degree in Health or related field
- State of Alaska License as Nursing Aide or Medical Assistant
- Experience in public health field
- Six (6) months of Head Start experience, ideally related to the health and nutrition component
WORKING ENVIRONMENT

This position corresponds to medium work, involving physical exertion of 20-50 lbs. frequently; such exertion involves the lifting and/or moving of young children in the program, and/or goods and materials within the facility. There is frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, and squatting/crouching. Part of work is performed in a classroom and family services setting, with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities, and abilities. The office is a non-smoking facility with outside smoking areas. May involve local travel between various program components of FNA and home visits where exposure to extreme weather conditions are likely. Works in an environment where protection of client confidentiality is essential. Position requires cleaning the class area every day, including putting supplies in proper space, cleaning and sanitizing surfaces with bleach solution to disinfect. Personal Protective Equipment will be provided where/when needed.

Supervision Received:
Position receives direct supervision from immediate supervisor; however, incumbent is expected to effectively perform day-to-day activity as denoted within job description. Work will be monitored through weekly meetings, monthly reports, and regular communication with your supervisor. General guidelines for operations are based on program requirements and the general policies and procedures of FNA.
