EYL 365 Project is Hiring an Independent Contractor-Culinary Arts Teaching Artist Near Washington, DC

EYL ( Enjoy Your Life) 365 Project is seeking a dynamic, passionate educator with experience teaching preschool, elementary, middle school and high school, an ability to teach afternoon and day classes, and a desire to be part of a rewarding learning environment.

Position Title: Culinary Arts Teaching Artist

Start Date: Hiring on a rolling basis throughout the Winter 2023 - Summer 2024

Location: In-person at partnering educational institutions and homeless shelters in the Washington, DC area.

This role is Part-Time - April 2024-August 2024.

Program & Job Description:

EYL 365 Project is currently accepting applications for a Culinary Arts Teaching Artist for the 2022- 2023 school year. We are seeking passionate and experienced Culinary Arts Teaching Artists with a strong interest in Social Justice and Racial Equity Arts Education. This position is for in school and/or after school residency opportunities, at our DCPS Ward 7 & 8 partner schools. TAs must have demonstrated previous experience teaching Culinary Arts, ideally in Washington, DC Public School settings. This position requires open communication, collaboration, and co- facilitation with educators on lessons, classroom management, and learning goals. Teaching Artists will have opportunities for professional development and advancement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Visually assess students to determine their level of practice.
  • Provides a holding space for presence, reflection and connection with self and others to occur with the students
  • Maintain and follow proper hygiene and sanitation standards.
  • Creating Culinary Art lesson plans, materials, and activities for students middle school through high school
  • Expedite and delegate kitchen tasks to students to ensure dishes are prepared within allot class time while teaching basic culinary skills
  • Teaching students how to apply cooking techniques to everyday life situations
  • Teaching students about supplies, pricing, menu planning, safety, and sanitation issues that arise in the restaurant business.
  • Responsible for teaching students about culinary terminology, food cuisines, meat, fish and poultry fabrication and general food knowledge.
  • Providing individualized instruction to students who have special needs or are interested in specific topics such as stress management, anxiety relief, or recovery from substance abuse
  • Motivate students with words of encouragement.
  • Connect with students during the classes through fun, intelligent sequencing.
  • Engage in administrative duties.
  • Youth-centered workshops focus on their education and skill attainment; adult educator workshops teach youth-serving professionals who want to utilize Culinary Art to support their curricula creation and facilitation

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree, Bachelor's Degree in Culinary Arts, or at least three years experience in the restaurant or food service industries.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • The power to teach young ones that knowledge and creativity are true magic
  • The talent to encourage connections between Culinary Art problem-solving with real-life problem-solving
  • Conduct interactive, friendly, and fun classes with 10-15 kids
  • The sincere drive to be a positive role model and promote good sportsmanship
  • Ability to promote a feeling of security and trust in children by being warm, supportive, and comforting.
  • Are enthusiastic and passionate about working with young children.
  • Ability to commute to contracted locations.
  • Able to effectively collaborate with other teaching staff (when necessary)
  • Ability to work well in an inner-city environment.
  • Applicants will undergo a thorough background check and fingerprint
  • Mediate any conflicts that may arise between students.
  • Availability to work after-school hours

QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED

  • Minimum of three years Culinary Art teaching experience.
  • Advanced experience (2-5 years of experience) facilitating/teaching middle and/or high school school-aged youth, working with racially and ethnically diverse and
  • Holds high expectations for each student and works to foster student achievement through building individual relationships
  • Enthusiasm and passion for mentoring others and making change in communities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with citizens, staff, parents, young people, volunteers, and community groups
  • Fluency in multiple student-centered instructional approaches
  • Commitment to student life
  • Proven dedication to professional growth and purpose-driven practice
  • Professional practice and ability to model contemplation as part of intellectual exploration

Job Types: Part-time, Contract

Pay: $40.00 - $60.00 per hour
