Lab Teaching Assistant Student Advisor

EXPLO’s summer programs run this summer fromJune 30th to August 9th, 2024, with staff orientation beginning on June 22nd. This role is available at:
  • EXPLO Pre-College, for students in grades 10-12 at Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA. 
The Opportunity
Teaching Assistants are critical to building a strong EXPLO community by working closely with students in the classroom and on their residential floors. Teaching Assistants support our instructors in and out of the classroom through co-teaching lessons, covering classes, helping setup activities (including science labs), working directly with students to provide coaching and support, and chaperoning academic trips off campus. They also serve as Advisors for a group of students living in residential halls to ensure their safety and well-being during their time at EXPLO.
Teaching Assistant Responsibilities
  • Work closely with instructors and instructional coaches to provide a safe and effective learning environment for Summer Program students, primarily in a science lab context
  • Connect and engage with students while in class or in a lab
  • Set up, maintain, inventory, and pack up classroom and laboratory spaces and materials throughout the summer
  • Assist teachers in delivering EXPLO’s project-based and experiential curriculum 
  • Substitute teach for other instructors who are not able to teach due to illness or any other absence
  • Assist with the coordination and supervision of guest speakers, academic programming, and chaperoning off-campus academic trips
  • Attend scheduled meetings with other members of the Office of Teaching and Learning, including periodic professional development
Student Advisor Responsibilities
  • Work with a co-Advisor to care for and advise a group of residential or day students in personal, social, and academic matters
  • Provide a healthy, safe, and engaging living environment for students
  • Work closely with Residence Directors to discuss strategies for community building within your advising group, assess individual student progress, and incorporate feedback from observations 
Campus Operations Student Life
  • Lead and support recreational activities every day and every other evening
  • Chaperone students on evening and weekend trips off-campus
  • Be the first person called to be a course assistant or substitute
  • Perform operational and programmatic tasks as needed, which may include assisting with event set up, working individually and as a team to complete tasks on campus that are necessary to program function, and performing additional duties as they may be assigned to you
About You
You’ve got:
  • 2 years of post high school experience by the summer
  • An interest in education and working with high school students
  • College-level coursework in one or more fields related to the academic courses we offer
  • Availability to live and work on campus for the duration of the summer program
Ideally, you’ve also got:
  • Laboratory science experience
  • Some experience with kids and/or adolescents
  • A valid US driver’s license with a clean driving record
Compensation Benefits
This is a seven week, seasonal position. Remote training for this role may begin as early as January 2024. In person training begins in mid-June 2024. Compensation for this role starts at $4950 plus room and board.
