Primary Functions

The Ophthalmic Technician works as part of the patient care team to provide cost-effective quality care. Acting as the physician-patient liaison, patient advocate, and educator, the Ophthalmic Technician provides accurate and timely data for the physician and relays information to the patient per the physician’s guidelines. Travel to satellite offices as dictated by the needs of the practice is essential in this position.

Essential Job Functions/Duties

· Ability to perform basic skills: Measuring and recording acuities, lensometry, color vision testing, autorefraction, Amsler grid, evaluation of pupils, keratometry, dilation of pupils, stereoscopic vision testing, basic ocular motility, color plates, basic tonometry (including Goldman applanation tonometry and tonopen), manual blood pressures, basic principles of contact lenses care and cleaning, operation of AED/epipen and emergency oxygen supplies.

· Maintain competency in use of instruments and equipment.

· Confirm data obtained from testing is accurate and reproducible.

· Understand and complete patient charting, including chief complaint, history of current Illness, past ocular history, family history, systemic illnesses (past and present), medical doctor, medications, allergies, drug reactions, and social history.

· Maintain proper instrument and equipment care and maintenance using microbial control and sterilization techniques.

· Exercise universal precautions for ocular diseases, general ocular anatomy and physiology, ocular emergencies, and metric conversions.

· Maintain supplies and equipment in work area.

· Assist with in-office minor surgeries and laser surgeries as needed.

· Accurately complete, update, and record clinical documentation.

·Understand types, strengths, actions, and complications of drugs commonly used in the ophthalmic practice.

· Call prescriptions into pharmacies or by use of E-Rx system as necessary and under physician direction.

·Continue advancement of clinical skill sets that may include scribing, advanced ocular testing, visual fields, retinal/optic nerve head imaging, A-scans, supply management, and/or triage.

· Participate in other organizational responsibilities such as safety committees, wellness programs, training new staff, and other non-clinical functions.

· Maintain active CPR/Basic Life Support and First Aid Certification.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
