ERT is Hiring a Linux System Administrator (Hybrid) Near Seattle, WA

Position Description

  • Manage system user accounts and grant varying levels of access privileges
  • Install new and rebuild existing Linux servers and configure hardware, services, settings and storage in accordance with NWFSC standards and project requirements. Operating systems used are CentOS and RedHat
  • Install and maintain configuration of a variety of applications in accordance with NWFSC standards. Primary applications used include, but are not limited to, the following: Apache we server, Tomcat, BIND, Nagios and Nagvis Snort, Gitlab, ope DCIM, R-cran, ColdFusion, and Commonspot;
  • Assist in modifying and developing perl scripts used to automate tasks and/or make configuration changes
  • Work independently or alongside the Federal Linux System Administrator to deploy new projects and technologies, and document procedures
  • Work closely with NWFSC Helpdesk staff, developers, database administrators, and NWFSC staff and their partners in a professional and timely manner
  • Troubleshoot software, hardware and network issue
  • Use basic troubleshooting tools (e.g., nmap, dig, tcpdump, netstat, lsof) to troubleshoot network related issues
  • Support and maintain KVM virtual computing environment; and
  • Maintain data backup and recovery system using Veritas Netbackup

Required Skills

8 years of professional experience leading to knowledge and experience in the following:

  • Experience working in a Linux environment specifically with CentOS and RedHat
  • Experience with Oracle database platform including Oracle Application Express (APEX) and the Esri ArcGIS Enterprise platform.
  • Experience developing scripts to automate tasks 

Education

B.S. / B.A. or higher degree in computer science, related field or equivalent.

Background

The Scientific Data Management (SDM) team under the Operations Management and Information (OMI) Division at NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) in Seattle, WA provides tools and knowledge to help research staff accomplish information management goals including database design, data management and dissemination, metadata creation, and application development. SDM has developed and maintains several existing applications to provide access to tabular and spatial data to meet NWFSC and West Coast Region (WCR) data management needs. Currently SDM has focused application and database development on the Oracle database platform including Oracle Application Express (APEX) and the Esri ArcGIS Enterprise platform for spatial applications.
