Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities

  • The Structural Engineer position is responsible for structural design and analysis projects under EnergySolutions Waste Management Organization. Typical projects include, but are not limited to, design of radioactive material transportation packages and related components/ancillaries, liners and containers, and nuclear plant waste processing systems. This position also provides support to other groups within EnergySolutions, and interfaces with internal and external engineering resources and contractors performing tasks related to structural engineering.
  • Designs and (depending on seniority) supervises design team with fabrication projects. May use computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform assignments. Able to take designs from concept to final design and fabrication. Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments. Makes decisions independently on complex engineered systems, commensurate with experience and seniority. Applies knowledge of Structural principles to design, plan, and fabricate structural equipment.
  • Performs a variety of engineering calculations using traditional engineering methods and linear/non-linear Finite Element Analysis (FEA) (ANSYS or/and LS-DYNA FEA software) to document compliance with project and code requirements.
  • Assists in the preparation and approval of design documents including supervision of designers in document development in accordance with approved procedures, processes and design requirements
  • Provides technical expertise and guidance to develop, manage and implement engineering analysis, activities and programs to identify and resolve equipment and system problems.
  • Utilize codes and standards applicable to structural engineering in the nuclear industry (e.g., ASME BPVC, AISC, ANSI, etc.).
  • Ensures relevant design criteria, specifications, practices, procedures, codes, site design, safety and licensing basis are used in preparation of design media.
  • Evaluate radioactive material transportation package designs under normal operations and accident scenarios postulated by 10CFR71, 49 CFR 173, and IAEA SSR-6. Assist in development of Safety Analysis Report Chapters for new applications and addendums/amendments of existing licenses for radioactive material transportation packages.
  • Interfaces with staff, within the team and supporting sub-contractors to ensure work is being completed in a safe and efficient manner, ensuring that safety is an integral element embodied in equipment design and specification.
  • Works in multi-discipline teams on project-based work and ensures integration of design across multiple disciplines.
  • Performs checking to ensure accuracy of design media in accordance with company policies and procedures and client expectations.
  • Works on a timeline, ensuring the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of work and initiates corrective measures to overcome delays.
  • Understands, complies and is responsible for working to environmental health and safety policies and procedures, and attends meetings as required.
  • Recommends new equipment, concepts and techniques to improve performance, simplify design, reduce costs, correct design flaws or to comply with changes in client requirements, codes or regulations.
  • Performs independent research, reviews, studies and analyses.
  • Supports installation and testing of site systems and components.
  • Participates in the preparation of cost estimates for engineering services to internal and external clients and coordinates work assignments to meet project-established schedules and budgets.
  • Relies on experience and judgment.
  • Works under limited supervision.
  • Significant creativity and latitude is expected.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements/Skills

  • Academic or industrial experience using finite element analysis (FEA) codes such as ANSYS and LS-DYNA (Required)
  • Demonstrated experience using nuclear industry codes and standards such as ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Section III) and AISC (N690 and 360) (Desired)
  • Working experience with radwaste package design and analysis in accordance with the requirements of 10CFR71, IAEA SSR-6, and 49 CFR 173 (Desired)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong knowledge in functional discipline and its practical application
  • Strong knowledge of industry codes and regulations

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Ability to carry up to 15 pounds; handle and reach below shoulder
  • Ability to use hands to accomplish tasks as assigned
  • Ability to effectively communicate; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
  • Ability to see close and distance and basic colors/shades
  • Ability to work inside an office
  • Ability to work alone, interact with the public, and perform under deadline pressure
