Job Description

SGM is seeking a full-time Civil/Site Development Senior Engineer I for our Durango office. A Senior Engineer I, plans, develops, and manages projects of all sizes with limited external direction. Wins and/or maintains clients through responsive service, experience, expertise, presence, and valued opinions. Regularly directs work of and supervises junior staff members. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of business development, client service management, or technical specialization.

The ideal candidate has a strong desire to live, work and play in Western Colorado, and will help forward SGM's mission to make its clients successful by delivering practical, innovative solutions. Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Regularly develops project scopes/budgets with limited input required from others.
  • Leads competitive proposal efforts.
  • Manages scope, budget, and schedule (without oversight) for many projects or major tasks on large, multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Focuses on planning, directing, and reviewing the work of junior engineers and performing higher-level tasks, such as creative solution identification, critical problem solving, etc.
  • Frequently serves as QA/QC officer.
  • CAD and field responsibilities are limited.
  • Often participates in critical construction milestone events and trouble-shooting activities.
  • May self-perform a limited number of small projects, especially for critical clients and/or when high-level experience/judgment is required or when critical to business development.
  • Common to serve as Engineer-of-Record and review work of other engineering firms on behalf of clients.
  • Serve as designated client service manager. Responsible for relationship-building with small and/or large clients.
  • Interact effectively with elected officials on a routine basis.
  • Resolve the majority of conflicts with clients.
  • Will be responsible for Civil Business Development\Marketing in the Durango Market.
  • May serve as a Team Leader or have a direct report.
  • Will serve as a Civil Leader in the Durango Office.
  • Regularly lead and often assist with prospective new client relationship building.
  • Will lead or assist with the development and promotion of new services.
  • May lead "thought leadership" activities and lead or assist with Team/Sector business development strategies.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directs technical work of others as a frequent project role. Serves frequently as a project QA/QC officer. Typically, is a primary technical resource.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related Engineering field required.
  • Current Colorado and New Mexico PE or ability to get licensure by reciprocity within 90 days.
  • 12 - 22 years of experience

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of engineering principles, practices, and tools.
  • Teaching expert in Civil 3D (CAD) and other design, data recording, and analysis software.
  • Expert in hydrologic and hydraulic analysis using HEC-HMS, & RAS, EPA SWMM, HEC-SSP, and a basic understanding of 2D hydraulic modeling.
  • Significant experience in reservoir design or site design.
  • Demonstrable experience in irrigation design and stream diversions.
  • Thorough understanding of safety regulations related to assigned projects.
  • Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts with clients.
  • Ability to be both creative and analytical.
  • Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.
