SUMMARY: 

The Associate Director oversees the Mental Health Parity Collaborative, a collaborative of newsrooms reporting on Mental Health care access and inequities in the U.S. The Associate Director manages the daily operations of the Mental Health collaborative which includes recruitment, training, communications and support for ethical and effective mental health and substance abuse reporting. The Associate Director reports to the Senior Associate Director RCJF, and the Director of Mental Health Programs in all program activities, which aim to improve mental health reporting and reduce stigma. Due to the travel locations, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) will be required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Foster collaboration and connections between collaborative members, working with national media partners. Provide guidance, mentorship, and resources to collaborative partners to enhance their coverage. Partner with RCJF staff to offer interactions between journalism programs to include shared training, leadership development, data collection and reporting. Partner with Mental Health Program Public Policy staff in activities aimed at raising public awareness. Represent The Carter Center at conferences, workshops and presentations.
  • Ensure partners adhere to established project editorial and workflow guidelines and timelines developed by the Center. Strengthen and expand reach of partner coverage on mental healthcare and substance use issues and inequities through social media, partnerships, and networks. Provide editorial advice and support on partner’s stories. Strengthen and expand the reach of partners’ coverage on mental health care and substance abuse, treatment and inequities through social media, partnerships, and networks.
  • Serves as a project manager for the collaborative. Responsible for tracking data and deliverables, working with a range of personality types, creating equitable and inclusive news teams, and generating journalism that reflects and engages the communities it serves. This position also integrates programming, data, research and recruitment with the RCJF staff
  • Develop and maintain program grants to include drafting and reviewing grant proposals, monitoring appropriate use of grants, evaluating grant-funded activities, and writing reports on grant activities to be submitted to donors

FORMAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Directs the planning, development, and operations of a program.
  • Collaborates with representatives from private, government, and international agencies.
  • Plans, executes, and monitors program budgets, including approval of expenditures; prepares annual financial and program reports to external parties with interests in the program.
  • May engage in fundraising initiatives on behalf of the program.
  • Ensures that the program is in compliance with federal and international laws and regulations.
  • Oversees program communications, including development of communications strategies, development of key program messages, production of print and electronic materials, and reputation management.
  • Represents the program in various national and international fora, and actively engages with representatives from other NGO's for purposes of conducting research and designing new initiatives.
  • May supervise program staff. Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in field related to specific program as indicated and six years program related experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Master’s degree in a field related to the Program(s) and previous experience managing a journalism collaborative.
  • Must be highly organized, self-motivated and demonstrate excellent time management skills.
  • Skill and interest in building relationships remotely with a diverse group of journalists across the country
  • Commitment to and experience with creating equitable and inclusive news teams and generating journalism that reflects and engages the communities they serve.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to The Carter Center on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines. All non-exempts employees must reside within the State of Georgia. The Carter Center reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
