Job Description

This position performs as a first-line manager of professional positions in a structured, complex organization with the responsibility of directing other professional staff and technical employees in the Food, Enteric Pathogen, and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Unit. Testing in this unit includes food assays utilizing ISO17025 standards, enteric pathogen
testing for the detection of food and water borne pathogens, parasitology, and sexually transmitted infections (STI) following CLIA federal standards and College of Pathologists (CAP). This position requires a thorough knowledge of methods and techniques used in food and high complexity clinical testing within the scope of BSL-2 and BSL-3 level medical microbiology. The manager requires knowledge of general supervisory skillsets such as approving leave, performing service ratings, counseling employees, participating in employee grievance procedures, understanding of budgets, hiring, and training of personnel. With general supervision, and using considerable independent judgment, it is the
responsibility of this position, to work within general methods and procedures to direct the improvement of clinical diagnostic testing toward the institution of new methods. Lab operations must comply with the Bureau of Laboratories Quality Assurance program including turn around expectations. This position must work with the Health and Safety
program. This unit also provides laboratory support for Federal testing services to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the FDA Food Defense Initiatives, and Laboratory Response Network (LRN) for high consequence pathogens and testing to support MDHHS Sexually Transmitted Diseases program.

Required Education and Experience

Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, forensic science, biology, microbiology, or a related pure or applied science.

Experience
Five years of experience equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist or Microbiologist, including three years equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist P11 or Microbiologist P11, two years equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist 12 or Microbiologist 12, or one year equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist Specialist 13, Microbiologist Specialist 13, or Laboratory Scientist Manager 13.

Vacation and Sick Leave: Eligible full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 personal days and 13 sick days per year that may be rolled over to the following year if not used. Eligible employees also receive an additional day each year for community service or school functions.

Paid Parental Leave: Eligible employees can take 12 weeks of paid leave immediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.

Paid Holidays: Eligible employees receive 13 or 14 paid holidays each year including New Year’s Eve and Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve and Day.
