Overview & Responsibilities
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
This position installs, administers, and maintains computer hardware, operating system, and database administration software. This position is designed to provide the information technology infrastructure required to run application software to support the computational and information needs of the company. General functions of the job include: installing and maintaining computer hardware; analyzing and monitoring operating system and database management system performance, and taking action to resolve performance issues as necessary; writing programs in appropriate languages to interface with the operating systems and database management systems in use by the company; designing and configuring security provisions provided by hardware and software suppliers; evaluating new hardware, operating systems, and database management systems, and making recommendations concerning the use and compatibility of new hardware and software with existing infrastructure; reviewing technical manuals, publications, and other materials to keep current on the state of technology.
BACKGROUND and EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer or information science; mathematics or engineering
  • 6 plus years of experience installing, configuring, and maintaining computer hardware, operating and database management system software.
  • Expert knowledge of internals of computer hardware, operating and database management systems software.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and demonstrated capability with the use of project management concepts and tools.
  • Expert ability to write instructions at the machine, operating and database management systems software level using appropriate programming languages.
  • Strong knowledge of system and software quality assurance best practices and methodologies.
  • Excellent understanding of the organization's goals and objectives.
  • Superior communications skills including writing and speaking.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate ideas using both technical and non-technical language.
  • Ability to conduct research into technical and application functional issues and products.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Experienced at working in a teaming, collaborative environment.
  • Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
  • Strong understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and practices.
  • Hands-on operating systems and database tuning and troubleshooting experience.
NATURE OF THE JOB
  • General nature of the job includes: Installing, configuring, patching, upgrading, maintaining, monitoring, planning, coordinating, communicating, problem-solving, deploying.
  • Activities of the job are primarily covered by policies and precedents; however, the incumbent will often create new procedures or modify existing procedures to adapt them to novel situations.
  • Job has a high degree of new and unfamiliar content requiring the incumbent to utilize logic and technical know-how.
CONTACT WITH OTHERS
  • Collaborates with suppliers, analysts, designers, and system owners for installation, testing, operation, and administration of computer hardware and operating and database management systems software and applications
  • Identifies and recommends computer hardware and/or software required for successful operation of company's application software.
  • Prepares and delivers activity and progress reports for presentation to the IT Leadership Team and occasionally the executive management team.
  • Negotiates contracts with computer hardware and operating and database management software and service providers.
  • Liaises with company's computer hardware and technical software suppliers to obtain quick corrections for problems or emergencies.
  • Provides direction to the application team in support of application software operations.
  • Liaises with network administrators and software engineers to assist with design specifications, program logic, and data conversions.
  • Works with application development staff to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance practices.
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/COMPETENCIES
  • Evaluates, installs, configures, and deploys computer hardware and operating and database management systems software products, and/or enhancements to existing applications throughout the enterprise.
  • Collaborates with analysts, designers, and system owners in the testing of computer hardware and operating and database management system software programs and applications.
  • Recommends additional hardware or software requirements needed for successful computer hardware and operating and database management software deployments, configuration, or maintenance.
  • Ensures that any computer hardware or operating or database management systems software integrations into company's systems meets functional requirements, system compliance, and interface specifications.
  • Performs daily monitoring and troubleshooting of computer hardware and operating and database management systems software; installs and configures patches and upgrades as required.
  • Prepares and delivers activity and progress reports for presentation to the IT Leadership Team and occasionally the executive management team.
  • Liaises with the company's computer hardware and operating and database management system software suppliers for prompt rectification of any problems or emergencies.
  • Provides direction to the application team in support of application systems operations.
  • Liaises with network administrators and software engineers to assist with design specifications, program logic, and data conversions.
  • Assesses and develops long-term strategic goals for operating and database management system software in conjunction with system owners and department managers.
  • Works with application development staff to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures.
  • Installs and configures relevant network components to ensure operating and database management systems access and consistency and integrity.
  • Responds to and resolves operating and database management systems software access and performance issues.
  • Monitors operating and database management performance and implements improvements.
  • Designs and implements disasters recovery policies and procedures for computer hardware, operating, database management, and application software systems and associated data.
  • Monitors, optimizes, and allocates physical data storage for database systems.
  • Plans and coordinates data migrations across systems.
  • Conducts research and makes recommendations on computer hardware, operating and database management systems products, services, protocols, and standards.
  • Performs operating and database management systems software security audits.
  • Establishes appropriate end-user access control levels to operating and database management systems software.
  • Supervises and/or provides guidance to junior members of the team.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work to meet deadlines.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Able to participate in training sessions, presentations, and meetings.
  • Some travel may be required for the purpose of off-site installations and configuration.
  • On-call availability as required and when needed.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, power tools, and to handle other computer components.
  • Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as servers and peripherals.
  • Able to install enterprise equipment into a datacenter rack with the aid of a mechanical lifter.

  • Patch Management systems such as Kace or Tanium
  • Microsoft Deployment System / Intune
  • Hard Disk Encryption technologies such as BitLocker
  • Threat Prevention deployments such as Antivirus and DLP
  • Cisco and Aruba network administration and configuration
  • Networking technologies including configuration of interfaces, VLAN’s, VRFs, TCP/IP (Routing / DHCP / DNS etc.)
  • Firewall administration and configuration
  • Data Protection tools such as Veeam and Commvault to ensure backups are maintained and replicated offsite
  • Service Monitoring solutions management and configuration
