Registered Nurse (RN)- Specialty

ER, ICU, OR, PACU, Psych, Hemodialysis

• Pay: $38-$40

Specialty Registered Nurse: Includes Hemodialysis, Operating Room,
Interventional Services, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Intensive Care Unit
(ICU), Emergency Room, Psychiatric, and Ambulatory Care/Extended Care

• Has been actively practicing as a registered nurse in a Hemodialysis,

Operating Room, Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Room, Pre- and Post-
Anesthesia Care Unit for two years, or has been actively practicing in an
acute and long-term setting for one year.

• Demonstrates ability to operate and monitor specialized equipment

including, but not limited to portable dialysis machines, CRRT machines,
oxygen, hypothermia units, various types of suction apparatus, infusion
equipment, PCA, epidural pumps, sequential compression devices,
cardio-respiratory monitors, vital sign monitors, and assist with patients in
the Intensive Care settings who have invasive hemodynamic catheters,
monitors, and ventilators.

Operating Room.

• Demonstrates ability to provide a full range of operating room nursing

services within the professional scope of practice for a variety of
operative procedures

• Demonstrates ability to conduct pre-operative assessment and

interviews for patients scheduled.

• Demonstrates ability to conduct post-operative patient evaluations,

summon the appropriate specialist in emergency situations and
provide nursing care as necessary throughout the operative episode.
Pre- and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

• Demonstrates ability to provide the full range of PACU nursing

services within the professional scope of practice for a variety of
operative procedures.

• Demonstrates ability to provide head-to-toe assessment. Knowledge

of normal versus abnormal findings and reporting of abnormal findings
to Charge Nurse and/or M.D., if warranted.

• Demonstrates ability to critical thinking to intervene with appropriate

intervention for urgent/emergent care. Care of acute and chronically ill
patients.

• Demonstrates knowledge of hemodynamics.

Intensive Care Unit

• Demonstrates ability to provides complex and comprehensive professional nursing services within the professional scope of practice for a variety of diagnoses for patients of all ages.
• Demonstrates ability to provide total patient care, including medications, orders, and treatments.
• Demonstrates ability to assist the physician in performing special procedures, including sterile procedures.
• Demonstrates ability to provide the full range of ICU nursing services within the professional scope of practice for a variety of post-operative and critically ill

patients.

Emergency Room

• Demonstrates ability to provide comprehensive emergency nursing

services within the professional scope of practice for a variety of
medical/surgical diagnoses.

• Demonstrates ability to administer oxygen, IV fluids, blood

transfusions, and prescribed medications in accordance with VA
policy.

• Demonstrates ability to observe and assess patients’ clinical

condition, recognize, and promptly report significant changes
indicative of complications.

• Demonstrates ability to initiate resuscitative measures in emergency

situations.

Psychiatry

• Demonstrates ability to conduct initial assessment on patients;

develop nursing care plans based on identified patient needs,
coordinate with ancillary services to assure provision of care,
document all plans, assessments and care provided. Provide patient
and family education throughout the hospitalization. Initiate discharge
planning.

• Demonstrates ability to document observations, assessments, and

changes in patients’ condition.

• Demonstrates ability to collaborate with health team members to

facilitate positive patient care outcomes

• Demonstrates ability to provide a full range of nursing care to patients

with a variety of physical and/or behavior problems.

Ambulatory Care/Extended Care

• Demonstrates ability to provide comprehensive nursing care within

the professional scope of practice for a variety of diagnoses for adult
medical, surgical, and geriatric patients.

• Demonstrates ability to coordinate care between services, assists the

patient/family with resources needed based on patient’s needs, places
orders per protocol, promotes access with non-face-to-face visits as
appropriate, e.g., telephone and secure messaging, triage patient
calls and walk- ins.

• Demonstrates ability to administer oxygen, IV fluids, antibiotics,

prescribed medications, and other medications in accordance with VA
policy.
